MOSCOW (AP) ? A Moscow court is expected to hand down a verdict for the first and only official charged with the death of whistleblowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in a case his family dismissed as sham and humiliating.
Magnitsky died in jail in 2009 after his pancreatitis went untreated. An investigation by Russia's presidential council on human rights concluded that Magnitsky was severely beaten and denied medical treatment. It accused the government of failing to prosecute those responsible.
Magnitsky's death became a rallying point for human rights advocates in Russia and abroad.
The court on Friday will rule in the case of ex-Moscow jail doctor charged with negligence.
The lawyer's family and associates describe the trial as sham, saying that authorities have failed to prosecute the officials responsible for Magnitsky's persecution and death.
