If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you have can make a large difference in what happens next. How can you determine what insurance you require and how to purchase it? Your car insurance may be able to pay for car crash expenses ranging from car repairs to replacement costs. No matter where you are living, you will need to buy some variety of auto insurance. Cliff Hanger: Washington Tries for Last-Minute Deal - Politics - CBN ...

With the edge of the fiscal cliff in sight there's still no deal in Washington.

The news comes as President Obama hosts a meeting Friday in a last ditch effort to break the stalemate with the Republican-dominated Congress.

"I have to be very honest. I don't know time-wise how it can happen now," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said.
???
If there is no deal by Jan. 1, every American will see their taxes go up and automatic spending cuts will be implemented.
????
Republicans continue to blame Democrats for the standoff, saying there are limits to compromise.

"Republicans aren't about to write a blank check on anything Senate Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. That wouldn't be fair to the American people," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, said.
????
Democrats blasted Republicans, insisting that taxes increase only for the wealthy Americans and made it clear they're unwilling to compromise on spending cuts.

"The Republicans in the House have left town. The negotiations between the president and the speaker have fallen apart as they have for the last three-and-a-half years. We've tried mightily to get something done," Reid said.

"The American people have a right to be very upset with this Congress," Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., charged.

Neither side appears confident a deal will be reached.
????
Nevertheless, the president is scheduled to meet with the top four congressional leaders Friday, and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, called the House back into session for a rare Sunday session.

Meanwhile, the country is set to reach its debt ceiling limit come Monday.
???
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he's working on a temporary fix. But economists worry this could plunge the United States back into a recession.

Verdict expected in Magnitsky's jail death case

MOSCOW (AP) ? A Moscow court is expected to hand down a verdict for the first and only official charged with the death of whistleblowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in a case his family dismissed as sham and humiliating.

Magnitsky died in jail in 2009 after his pancreatitis went untreated. An investigation by Russia's presidential council on human rights concluded that Magnitsky was severely beaten and denied medical treatment. It accused the government of failing to prosecute those responsible.

Magnitsky's death became a rallying point for human rights advocates in Russia and abroad.

The court on Friday will rule in the case of ex-Moscow jail doctor charged with negligence.

The lawyer's family and associates describe the trial as sham, saying that authorities have failed to prosecute the officials responsible for Magnitsky's persecution and death.

Female university students get drunk on purpose quicker than their male counterparts, and live a more sedentary life than they do, according to a study by the University of Vigo. Results show that 56.1% of female students are considered binge drinkers, as opposed to 41.3% of males.

Researchers from the HealthyFit group at the University of Vigo have studied university students' lifestyles; their analysis, which includes alcohol and illegal drug consumption habits, sport and food, concludes that most students indulge in unhealthy behaviour. One of the main results of the study is the high consumption of alcohol.

"The amount drunk per unit of time is higher among women. In other words, even though male students drink more often, females do so more intensively in shorter periods of time, which is known as binge drinking", explained to SINC Jos M Cancela Carral, co-author of the study published by the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Researchers randomly selected 985 students from different degree courses and in different years at the University of Vigo.

Of the females interviewed, 51.2% lead a sedentary lifestyle, while the percentage in males is 41.7%. When analysing students who maintain an appropriate level of physical activity, 38.6% of males do physical exercise, as opposed to only 20.9% of women.

"We were also surprised by the high consumption of illegal drugs among university students 44.9% of men and 30.9% of women which we understand could lead to significant future health problems, mainly related to the nervous system", underlined the researcher.

Anomalous attitudes to food were more evident among women (16.6%), although also present among men (8.8%). "However, the statistical analysis showed that this parameter depended on the degree the student was studying for", added Cancela. Such attitudes were much more common among those studying degrees related to education (19.2%) than among those studying courses related to health (6.3%).

Health network

Spanish universities set up a Healthy University Network in 2008, a project for healthy living for universities from all over Spain, the Spanish University Rectors' Association, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and some regional public health entities.

In the researcher's opinion, at many universities this network was nothing more than "a simple first step to get on the list and nothing else"; hence transversal content should be implemented in study plans related to food, physical exercise and healthy habits.

"In the light of the results, training and information courses are required in these areas, together with healthy leisure not just sports facilities to set up university guidance services for a healthy student lifestyle", concludes Cancela.

Genetic predisposition

A recent study published in the PNAS journal argues that the gene called RASGRF2 could be related to a predisposition to getting drunk.

According to scientists, this gene regulates the predisposition to drink excessive amounts of alcohol as it influences mesolimbic dopamine neuron activity, which is one of the ways dopamine is taken from one region of the brain to another.

Gunter Schumann, one of the main authors of the study, explained that even though we should not consider said gene to be the main cause as there are many environmental factors and other genes involved the study thereof helps to explain why some people are more vulnerable to alcohol than others.

South Korea slaps down phone subsidies, bans carriers from signing new contracts through most of January

South Korea is an ocean apart from North America in more ways than one. Where US and Canadian carriers virtually center their businesses around heavily subsidized phones, the Korea Communications Commission is discouraging the idea. The agency isn't just fining KT, LG U+ and SK Telecom for offering device discounts beyond 270,000 won ($252), it's banning those networks from taking new subscribers for as many as 24 days in January -- they'll have no choice but to serve their existing bases for most of the month. The providers are unsurprisingly miffed, although the punishment may be a win for customers who won't necessarily be as indebted to their carriers when they spring for a Galaxy Note II or Optimus G.

I don't think I commented on these people in your other thread (though I read the whole WIC debate and the underfeeding), but I have to say...

It is so unfair of me to judge from a few message board posts, but these people sound like they are in it for the "high" of helping, for the attention it brings them, and how it makes them feel. When fostering doesn't bring enough accolades, they foster FTT kiddos, when that doesn't bring enough accolades, they add surrogates to the mix, when that's not enough, they continue taking on kids when everyone says they shouldn't -- because it shows that no sacrifice is too great to get in the way of their heroism/martyrdom.

Like I said, it's unfair of me to judge, but that's what I hear this miasma.

Jack Flashback 2012: July - Georgia Jack Russell Rescue, Adoption ...

July was explosive. There is just no other way to say it. Our numbers exploded and one of our favorite firecrackers, Mars, finally got his forever home.

Mission for Mars

mars, jack russell terrier, parson russell terrier, smiling

Mars? expression after we told him he was getting his forever home ? we kid you not.

Mars came to us an absolute mess a few years ago ? but a gorgeous one. Even with facial scars from skin allergies, he was a beyond-handsome Parson Russell whom no one could take their eyes off of ? especially one of our volunteers, who fell head over heels for him but couldn?t take him home. ;)

In June, we received an email from a man named Gary Siverts about Mars that just up-ended our worlds. There was no doubt it: This was Mars? forever family. The problem? They lived across the country in Missouri. Once again, we do not have any kind of transport system in place and had to rely on volunteers to make it happen.

It eventually became a very successful ?Mission for Mars? and it one of our favorite memories of the year. We still receive timely updates and photos of Mars in his new home and you can bank on seeing a post dedicated just to him in the coming days.

More Festival Fun

Furever Fit in Johns Creek had their grand opening and invited us to attend.?We had a great time meeting everyone and hanging out for the day.?Best of all, three of our babies were adopted! Chip went home with the Moore family and Jocelyn, one of Susie?s puppies, went home with the Ramsey family.

So. Many. Dogs.

The most explosive part of the month (year!)? The arrival of eight dogs within a week: Tessa, Maggie, Ginger, Ringo, Tasha, Sasha, Linus and Opal. We had never received such an intake at once (or even within a year!) and it was a little overwhelming for such a small rescue. We are just now recovering, but happy to report that almost everyone from that group has found their forever home.

Ringo moved to foster care and was adopted by the Lester family in October.

Sasha was scooped up in mere seconds and renamed Pippa, while her daughter, Tasha, patiently waited until October to find her doting parents.

Opal was snatched up by the Golder family in September and recently came back to visit us.

Linus took a trip up north, snapped at someone in fear ? and then made a trip back down South. He is now loving life with his ?forever foster? home.

Ginger and Maggie had a much harder time waiting ? but we?ll read about those success stories in the coming months! ;)

Tessa?is the only one left out of the bunch. Despite her silly ways, she is adorable and we? are very surprised she is still with us ? but have no doubts we?ll be sharing her success story soon.

Egypt's disputed charter headed toward approval

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist-backed constitution headed toward likely approval in a final round of voting on Saturday, but the deep divisions it has opened up threaten to fuel continued turmoil.

Passage is a victory for Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, but a costly one. The bruising battle over the past month stripped away hope that the long-awaited constitution would bring a national consensus on the path Egypt will take after shedding its autocratic ruler Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

Instead, Morsi disillusioned many non-Islamists who had once backed him and has become more reliant on his core support in the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. Hard-liners in his camp are determined to implement provisions for stricter rule by Islamic law in the charter, which is likely to futher fuel divisions.

His liberal and secular opposition, in turn, faces the task of trying to organize the significant portion of the population angered by what they see as attempts by Morsi and the Brotherhood to gain a lock on political power. The main opposition group, the National Salvation Front, said it would now start rallying for elections for the next lawmaking, lower house of parliament, expected early next year.

"We feel more empowered because of the referendum. We proved that at least we are half of society (that) doesn't approve of all this. We will build on it," the Front's spokesman, Khaled Daoud, said. Still, he said, there was "no appetite" at the moment for further street protests.

Saturday's voting in 17 of Egypt's 27 provinces was the second and final round of the referendum. Though the constitution is widely expected to pass, the key questions will be over turnout and the margin of victory. Preliminary results from the first round a week ago showed only 32 percent turnout and a relatively low edge of 56 percent for the "yes" vote. Preliminary results from the second round are expected to emerge by early Sunday.

The new constitution would come into effect once official results are announced, expected in several days.

In a sign of disarray in Morsi's administration, his vice president and ? possibly ? the central bank governor resigned during Saturday's voting. Vice President Mahmoud Mekki's resignation had been expected since his post is eliminated under the new constitution. But its hasty submission even before the charter has been sealed and his own resignation statement suggested it was linked to Morsi's policies.

"I have realized a while ago that the nature of politics don't suit my professional background as a judge," his resignation letter, read on state TV, said. Mekki said he had first submitted his resignation last month but events forced him to stay on.

The status of Central Bank Governor Farouq el-Oqdah was murkier. State TV first reported his resignation, then soon after reported the Cabinet denied he has stepped down in a possible sing of confusion. El-Oqdah, in his post since 2003, has reportedly been seeking to step down but in recent weeks the administration was trying to convince him to stay on. The government is eager to show some stability in the economy as the Egyptian pound has been sliding and a much-needed $4.8 billion loan from the IMF has been postponed.

Over the past month, seven of Morsi's 17 top advisers and the one Christian among his top four aides resigned. Like Mekki, they said they had never been consulted in advance on any of the president's moves, including his Nov. 22 decrees, since rescinded, that granted himself near absolute powers.

Those decrees sparked large street protests by hundreds of thousands around the country, bringing counter-rallies by Islamists. The turmoil was further fueled with a Constituent Assembly almost entirely made up of Islamists finalized the constitution draft in the dead of night amid a boycott by liberals and Christians. Rallies turned violent. Brotherhood offices were attacked, and Islamists attacked an opposition sit-in outside the presidential palace in Cairo leading to clashes that left 10 dead.

The turmoil opened up a vein of bitterness that the polarizing constitution will do little to close. Morsi opponents accused him of seeking to create a new Mubarak-style autocracy. The Brotherhood accused his rivals of being former Mubarak officials trying to topple an elected president and return to power. Islamists branded opponents "infidels" and vowed they will never accept anything but "God's law" in Egypt.

Both rounds of voting saw claims by the opposition and rights groups of voting violations. On Saturday they said violations ranged from polling stations opening late to Islamists seeking to influence voters to say "yes." The official MENA news agency said at least two judges have been removed for coercing voters to cast "yes" ballots.

The opposition's talk of now taking the contest to the parliament elections represented a shift in the conflict ? an implicit gamble that the opposition can try to compete under rules that the Islamists have set. The Brotherhood's electoral machine has been one of its strongest tools since Mubarak's fall, while liberal and secular parties have been divided and failed to create a grassroots network.

In the first post-Mubarak parliament elections last winter, the Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis won more than 70 percent of seats in the lower chamber, which was later dissolved by a court order. The opposition is now betting it can do better with the anger over Morsi's performance so far.

The schism in a country that has for decades seen its institutions function behind a facade of stability was on display in Saturday's lines of voters.

In the village of Ikhsas in the Giza countryside south of Cairo, an elderly man who voted "no" screamed in the polling station that the charter is "a Brotherhood constitution."

"We want a constitution in the interest of Egypt. We want a constitution that serves everyone, not just the Brotherhood. They can't keep fooling the people," Ali Hassan, a 68-year-old wearing traditional robes, said.

But others were drawn by the hope that a constitution would finally bring some stability after nearly two years of tumultuous transitional politics. There appeared to be a broad economic split, with many of the middle and upper classes rejecting the charter and the poor voting "yes" ? though the division was not always clear-cut.

In Ikhsas, Hassan Kamel, a 49-year-old day worker, said "We the poor will pay the price" of a no vote.

He dismissed the opposition leadership as elite and out of touch. "Show me an office for any of those parties that say no here in Ikhsas or south of Cairo. They are not connecting with people."

In the industrial working class district of Shubra El-Kheima just north of Cairo, women argued while waiting in line over the draft charter.

Samira Saad, a 55 year old housewife, said she wanted her five boys to find jobs.

"We want to get on with things and we want things to be better," she said.

Nahed Nessim, a Christian, questioned the integrity of the process. "There is a lot of corruption. My vote won't count." She was taken to task by Muslim women wearing the niqab, which blankets the entire body and leaves only the eyes visible and is worn by ultraconservative women.

"We have a president who fears God and memorizes His words. Why are we not giving him a chance until he stands on his feet?" said one of the women, Faiza Mehana, 48.

The promise of stability even drew one Christian woman in Fayoum, southwest of Cairo, to vote "yes" ? a break with most Christians nationwide who oppose the draft. Hanaa Zaki said she wanted an end to Egypt's deepening economic woes.

"I have a son who didn't get paid for the past six months. We have been in this crisis for so long and we are fed up," said Zaki, waiting in line along with bearded Muslim men and Muslim women wearing headscarves in Fayoum, a province that is home to both a large Christian community and a strong Islamist movement.

The scene In Giza's upscale Mohandiseen neighborhood was starkly different.

A group of 12 women speaking to each other in a mix of French, Arabic and English said they were all voting "no."

"It's not about Christian versus Muslim, it is Muslim Brotherhood versus everyone else," said one of them, Shahira Sadeq, a Christian physician.

Kamla el-Tantawi, 65, said she was voted "against what I'm seeing" ? and she gestured at a woman nearby wearing the niqab.

"I lose sleep thinking about my grandchildren and their future. They never saw the beautiful Egypt we did," she said, harkening back to a time decades ago when few women even wore headscarves covering their hair, much less the black niqab.

Many voters were under no illusions the turmoil would end.

"I don't trust the Brotherhood anymore and I don't trust the opposition either. We are forgotten, the most miserable and the first to suffer," said Azouz Ayesh, sitting with his neighbors as their cattle grazed in a nearby field in the Fayoum countryside.

He said a "yes" would bring stability and a "no" would mean no stability. But, he added, "I will vote against this constitution."

Therefore, you should aim to spread out all available money for spending to all of the creditors that you owe money to so that each one can get a portion of your money. Paying each creditor something, even less than the minimum payment due, can usually appease your creditors enough that they will not turn your accounts over to collection agencies.

When working to better your credit score, it might be prudent to consider debt consolidation. Put all of your debts together to make it easier to budget for them. This is a lifesaver when it comes to getting your payments in on time and repairing your credit.

If you do not have a good credit rating, consider requesting that your bank reduce your credit limit. That said, this is only an option if you can maintain low balances. Maxing out your cards does you no good.

Carefully read the small print on your statements. Double-check every charge, to make sure that everything is accurate and you were only charged once for your purchases. It is only your responsibility to make sure everything is correct and error free.

If you are unable to make your monthly payments, let your creditors know, and try to work out a suitable payment plan with them. Frequently, if you contact your creditor, it may consider your needs and develop a payment plan without reporting to credit bureaus. Additionally, this will relive some of your financial stress and allow you to concentrate on paying off the creditors who will not let you alter payments.

If your credit does not allow you to obtain new credit, getting a secured one is much easier and will help fix your credit. These are extremely easy to qualify for. A secured credit card looks just like a regular card, and works like a regular card, but you have to have the necessary money in an account to guarantee payment. Responsible use of a credit card can help rebuild your credit.

Go over your monthly credit card statements to check for mistakes. If this is the case, you need to call the company right away to avoid them from reporting it to credit reporting agencies.

Have different types of credit if you want to fix your credit. Your credit score takes into account all types of credit that you have. If you make payments on time with your credit cards and home loans, you can make your credit better.

Collection agencies are stressful to deal with. Consumers can try to use a cease and desist letter if an agency is harassing them, but their usefulness is limited. Letters such as these prevent calls from collections agencies, but the consumer must still pay the debts under dispute.

Get out of debt. When you apply for a loan, they take into consideration the ratio of your debt and your income. Your debt-to-income ratio is part of the formula used to calculate your credit, the higher it is, the more you are viewed as a risk. Since it will likely take a while to get rid of your debts, write a plan for decreasing your debt gradually, and follow it.

If you fix your credit you can make your life more positive. There are free services to help you on your way to fixing your credit. Take advantage of the tips provided and start working your way to a great credit rating now.

IT is very amazing if you learn what you can about helpful resources. Now that you are armed with the right advice, you are bound for success. Use what you learned here to solve any problems that you might have, improving your life.

Lawmaker Urges More Mental Health Funding After Sandy Hook Massacre

CHICAGO (CBS) ? An Illinois state lawmaker said Wednesday that talking about gun control isn?t the only conversation we need to have after the shooting massacre at a grade school in Connecticut. WBBM Newsradio?s Regine Schlesinger reports state Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) said, despite existing strains on the state budget, Illinois must expand services for the mentally ill. play pause Lawmaker Seeks More Mental Health Funding WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger Lang has been a crusader for greater mental health resources. He said in virtually every mass shooting in America ? like the one in Newtown, Conn., last week, and the one at Northern Illinois University in 2008 ? the gunman was deranged. While Lang acknowledged gun laws are part of the conversation to preventing such shootings in the future, he said ?we also need to take a hard look at the people who use guns; and I?m not talking about the law-abiding citizen, I?m talking about those who have issues who should not have guns, those who have issues that need services they?re not getting. We need to do, clearly, a better job with that.? Collette Lueck, managing director of the Illinois Children?s Mental Health Partnership, also said better gun control is only one part of the solution to mass shootings. She said Illinois and the nation must do a better job of caring for the mentally ill. ?I don?t think America has to live tolerating mass shootings. The solutions aren?t easy,? Lueck said. ?There?s very little funding for prevention, early intervention, screening ? things that get kids help at earlier ages, and earlier stages of need.? The state?s mental health crisis hotline for children last year logged an average of 115 calls a day, with at least 10,000 children admitted to a psychiatric hospital on the day they were evaluated. Lang said there?s no pending legislation in the General Assembly right now dealing with mental health services, but he said the state must expand its programs for the mentally ill.

2nd person survived school shooting with injury: cops

Connecticut state police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance provides an update on the investigation of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, telling reporters that two adult survivors who suffered gunshot wounds at the school are recovering.

By M. Alex Johnson and Becky Bratu, NBC News

Updated at 1 p.m. ET: Police said Monday that two adults were injured but survived the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut?and will be interviewed as soon as they're well enough to answer questions.

Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance confirmed that a second adult was injured and survived, saying both were wounded in the "lower extremities."?Initial reports last week suggested that only one person had been injured and survived.

In the meantime, authorities were interviewing other witnesses and analyzing the evidence found at the school and the shooter's home. Among the physical evidence was a computer believed to belong to the gunman that had been heavily damaged.

?There are many, many witnesses,? Vance said Monday, promising that any interviews with children would be handled "extremely delicately."

Authorities say Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother in the head multiple times Friday at their home in Newtown, Conn., before heading to the school, where he fired hundreds of rounds and died with hundreds more at his disposal. He killed 20 children and six women at the school, they said.

An explanation still hasn't emerged for why Lanza killed the 26 people at Sandy Hook.

Connecticut Gov.?Dan Malloy appeared to open a window for speculation when he told NBC News on Sunday that Lanza attended Sandy Hook as a youngster. But Vance said Monday that police had discovered no connection between Lanza and the school. Earlier reports that his mother, Nancy, may have taught there also haven't borne out.?

The children ? 12 girls and eight boys, all of them 6 or 7 years old ? were shot as many as 11 times, authorities said. It appeared that Lanza had enough weapons and ammunition with him to have killed many more.

In addition to?an assault-style rifle and at least two handguns, he also had a shotgun in reserve in the car he drove to the school.?And when he was found, Lanza still had hundreds of rounds of ammunition in multiple magazines, after having already fired hundreds of rounds inside the school, where he killed himself with a gunshot to the head as emergency crews arrived.

Police said they were analyzing his the weaponry and checking out local gun ranges to learn whether he had ever been spotted at one of them.

Investigators had had high hopes that they could learn more from Lanza's computer, which was found at the home he shared with his mother. But law enforcement sources told NBC News' Pete Williams on Monday that the computer was heavily damaged and that its hard drive had been removed.

Police said Monday that they had had no previous contact with Lanza, and officials at?Western Connecticut State University in Danbury ? where Lanza enrolled at about 16 in 2008 ? said there was never any indication of trouble.

Malloy declined to say whether any documented evidence had been uncovered that Lanza might have been mentally disturbed.?But he said there were indications that Lanza had had a deeply troubled childhood.?

Lanza's parents were divorced, and he lived with his mother, who home-schooled him for part of his childhood, Malloy said.

Connecticut school shooter was 'very nervous around people'

"He never seemed to be a good fit," Malloy said. "It was a very difficult time for him and his mother."

Investigators have resolutely refused to go into detail about the timing of events Friday during official briefings. But investigators have told NBC News that Lanza first killed his mother, an avid gun enthusiast, with her own gun and then took multiple weapons with him as he drove to the school in her car.

To bypass security, Lanza smashed in a window, they said. He shot and killed Principal Dawn Hochsprung, 47, and Mary Sherlach, 56, a school psychologist, before proceeding to a classroom, where he found the door locked.

So he moved on to a second classroom, where he killed everyone he found, before doing the same in a third classroom, investigators believe. He then shot himself.

Although he was carrying three weapons, he used only one of them in all of the school killings ? a Bushmaster .223-caliber assault-style rifle similar to the one used by the snipers who terrorized the Washington, D.C., area in 2002. It was purchased legally, they said. He used one of the handguns to kill himself.

Authorities haven't said how Nancy Lanza stored the weapons.?

Chief Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and Isolde Raftery of NBC News?contributed to this report.

New technology may enable earlier cancer diagnosis: Nanoparticles amplify tumor signals, making them much easier to detect in urine

Dec. 17, 2012 ? Finding ways to diagnose cancer earlier could greatly improve the chances of survival for many patients. One way to do this is to look for specific proteins secreted by cancer cells, which circulate in the bloodstream. However, the quantity of these biomarkers is so low that detecting them has proven difficult.

A new technology developed at MIT may help to make biomarker detection much easier. The researchers, led by Sangeeta Bhatia, have developed nanoparticles that can home to a tumor and interact with cancer proteins to produce thousands of biomarkers, which can then be easily detected in the patient's urine.

This biomarker amplification system could also be used to monitor disease progression and track how tumors respond to treatment, says Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT.

"There's a desperate search for biomarkers, for early detection or disease prognosis, or looking at how the body responds to therapy," says Bhatia, who is also a member of MIT's David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. She adds that the search has been complicated because genomic studies have revealed that many cancers, such as breast cancer, are actually groups of several diseases with different genetic signatures.

The MIT team, working with researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, described the new technology in a paper appearing in Nature Biotechnology on Dec. 16. Lead author of the paper is Gabriel Kwong, a postdoc in MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and the Koch Institute.

Amplifying cancer signals

Cancer cells produce many proteins not found in healthy cells. However, these proteins are often so diluted in the bloodstream that they are nearly impossible to identify. A recent study from Stanford University researchers found that even using the best existing biomarkers for ovarian cancer, and the best technology to detect them, an ovarian tumor would not be found until eight to 10 years after it formed.

"The cell is making biomarkers, but it has limited production capacity," Bhatia says. "That's when we had this 'aha' moment: What if you could deliver something that could amplify that signal?"

Serendipitously, Bhatia's lab was already working on nanoparticles that could be put to use detecting cancer biomarkers. Originally intended as imaging agents for tumors, the particles interact with enzymes known as proteases, which cleave proteins into smaller fragments.

Cancer cells often produce large quantities of proteases known as MMPs. These proteases help cancer cells escape their original locations and spread uncontrollably by cutting through proteins of the extracellular matrix, which normally holds cells in place.

The researchers coated their nanoparticles with peptides (short protein fragments) targeted by several of the MMP proteases. The treated nanoparticles accumulate at tumor sites, making their way through the leaky blood vessels that typically surround tumors. There, the proteases cleave hundreds of peptides from the nanoparticles, releasing them into the bloodstream.

The peptides rapidly accumulate in the kidneys and are excreted in the urine, where they can be detected using mass spectrometry.

This new system is an exciting approach to overcoming the problem of biomarker scarcity in the body, says Sanjiv Gambhir, chairman of the Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. "Instead of being dependent on the body to naturally shed biomarkers, you're sampling the site of interest and causing biomarkers that you engineered to be released," says Gambhir, who was not part of the research team.

Distinctive signatures

To make the biomarker readings as precise as possible, the researchers designed their particles to express 10 different peptides, each of which is cleaved by a different one of the dozens of MMP proteases. Each of these peptides is a different size, making it possible to distinguish them with mass spectrometry. This should allow researchers to identify distinct signatures associated with different types of tumors.

In this study, the researchers tested their nanoparticles' ability to detect the early stages of colorectal cancer in mice, and to monitor the progression of liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis is an accumulation of scarring in response to liver injury or chronic liver disease. Patients with this condition have to be regularly monitored by biopsy, which is expensive and invasive, to make sure they are getting the right treatment. In mice, the researchers found that the nanoparticles could offer much more rapid feedback than biopsies.

They also found that the nanoparticles could accurately reveal the early formation of colorectal tumors. In ongoing studies, the team is studying the particles' ability to measure tumor response to chemotherapy and to detect metastasis.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Kathy and Curt Marble Cancer Research Fund.

Impact Magazine ? Archive ? Game Consoles Find New Uses

The games console; hated by parents across the land, who call it an expensive waste of money. However the days when consoles were just used for games is long gone, as people across the world have found a wide variety of unusual uses for controllers, processing units, motion sensors etc to innovate many different fields.

There has long been a dispute over which is better; the PS3 or Xbox 360 controller. According to the military the matter has been settled: the Xbox controller now finds itself at home not in the living room but on the front lines of war. American Gunship helicopters now have modified Xbox controllers instead of traditional controls. Anyone who?s played the Modern Warfare series will be familiar with calling in a UAV; in the real world, the Xbox controller can be used to fly one and attack real targets. On the ground bomb disposal robots have also had a makeover, with not just the Xbox controller but also the Wii getting a look in. At least 500 Wii controlled robots are in use today.

The Xbox Kinect has found an even more diverse range of uses. The Kinect is built to pick up movement, but what if you mounted it on something moving? In Japan a small company has successfully made the Kinect sensors to act as the eyes of their new robot ? all five tonnes of it! This monster goes by the name of Vaudeville and stands at over 12 feet high. Elsewhere the Kinect has found a home in medicine; the motion detection and voice commands allow surgeons to carry out delicate key hole surgery just by moving their hands in the air and speaking to the screens. Trials began in London back in May of this year. Indiana Jones may also soon be carrying a Kinect after archaeologists in Jordan hacked a Kinect to scan and map an entire dig site, vastly accelerating the process. Other uses for the Kinect include help with physiotherapy, motion controlled computer screens like in Minority Report and motion tracking security cameras that work at night.

PlayStation hasn?t missed out on all the fun; in 2010 the US air force unveiled ?Condor Cluster,? the 33rd largest super computer in the world, made almost entirely from PlayStation Threes. 1,760 game consoles were cannibalised in its construction and is now the fastest computer in the entire US armed forces. It?s interesting to note that Sony make a loss with ever PS3 sold as they expect people to buy the games and other accessories; I wonder how much money they lost because of the US defence programme mucking around with their stuff!

Parts of games are also used; the engine that runs MW3 is also used by a subsidiary company to provide combat simulators for armies around the world.

The consoles are also being used in an unusual way by the US intelligence services. They are acquiring games consoles from other countries to see if useful information can be found on the memory. A little bit crazy you may say but next time you throw out your old console, spare a thought for the intelligence service who may be trying to decide if your Achievements score in Call of Duty is a threat to national security!

The games industry has created many interesting possibilities; Microsoft had no idea what they had stumbled on when they created the Kinect and the immense possibilities that have been unlocked. Consoles have now found their way into different applications across the globe. With human imagination having no bounds, what will a games console be used for next?

Forcing Friends Into Lovers - Love and Dating

Well, the only things I can think of are...

-Try to make your confessions over a text alternative (Texting or Email)

-Don't expect her to be your girlfriend (Assuming you're male) as soon as you confess. Tell her you like her, but don't expect her to like you back immediately, or you'll just chase her off again. Give it a week or two before bringing up the possibility of a relationship.

Not much experience in terms of this stuff (First girlfriend only a few hours ago) but this is what I can give you.
