November is National Home Care Month!

November is National Home Care Month. This month is a time when the home care community joins together to celebrate and raise awareness about the many individuals who make home care possible. From an array of health, therapeutic and social services delivered to patients in their homes, to the patients themselves whose courage and independence inspires us all ? we work together to provide affordable, cost-effective, appropriate care in the comfort of the patient?s home.

Home care allows people to live independently, providing vital support for families while improving a patient?s quality of life. Generally speaking, individuals are most comfortable in their own homes. ?Home,? whether that is in your family home, an apartment, assited living or relative?s home,?it is where people experience the greatest sense of security, stability and belonging. Those receiving home care include the elderly and persons with disabilities,?as well as chronically ill and post-acute care patients of all ages.

Home care is an increasingly effective option for treating and managing a growing range of acute and chronic health conditions (i.e. congestive heart failure, diabetes, recuperation after surgery) outside of traditionally defined health care settings. Home care results in shortening a person?s length of stay in a hospital or nursing home by providing post-acute care that would otherwise occur only in a hospital.

A health crisis our country is facing can be summed up in two numbers: 5 and 50. These numbers stand for the 5 percent of patients who account for 50 percent of rising health care costs. For the top 5 percent of Americans who suffer from multiple chronic conditions, home care is the cost-effective answer to keep them out of hospitals and in their homes.

As the baby boomers in?America continue to age,?home care is projected to grow exponentially. Nurses, home health aides and personal care aides?are among the top five occupations projected to see the largest increase in jobs in the near future.

The home care nurse managing and treating chronic conditions, like diabetes or heart disease, helps oversee their client?s medications, check vital signs, monitor blood sugar levels and zero in on the most serious and oftentimes, most preventable health risk factors. In-home therapists help patients retain mobility and avoid injuries that could bring them back to the emergency room. Skilled home care agencies, made up of aides, nurses and therapists, help thousands of people with disabilities and medically frail or elderly patients avoid unnecessary or premature nursing home admissions and opt instead for the comfort of home.

We encourage you to join the growing number of passionate health care professionals that provide care and compassion and effectively work to provide high quality, cost-effective care at home!???????

Courtney Force leads Funny Car qualifying

POMONA, Calif. (AP) ? Courtney Force strengthened her bid for the NHRA Rookie of the Year award, while the Funny Car points leaders struggled Thursday in the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals.

Force, the youngest of Funny Car star John Force's four daughters, moved into position to claim her third No. 1 qualifying award of the season with 4.032-second run at 315.93 mph in a Ford Mustang.

"This was kind of surreal, coming out here and remembering what it was like (at her first race) in February, when I was so sick to my stomach," Force said. "I've got a great car and a great team. Running a 4.03 the first lap out is amazing. I'm hoping No. 1 holds up. That would be pretty awesome."

Points leader Jack Beckman and second-place Ron Capps weren't among the 12 drivers earning provisional positions in the 16-car field for Sunday's elimination rounds.

Beckman, who leads Capps by four points in the sixth and final round of the Countdown playoffs, escaped injury when the fiberglass body on his Dodge Charger blew off.

"I've never had that happen before and I'm not going to sign up for it again," Beckman said. "I had just let go of the wheel to reach for the parachute and all of a sudden there was no body on the car."

Capps completed his run, but was the first non-qualifier.

Beckman and Capps were the final drivers to make qualifying attempts for the day, too, with rain washing out the first session for the Top Fuel cars. Qualifying will continue with one round scheduled Friday afternoon and two rounds Saturday, but the rained-out Top Fuel session will not be made up.

Mike Neff, third in the standings entering the event, was No. 2 with a 4.062 at 313.66 and cut his deficit from 88 to 86 points.

Allen Johnson, who will wrap up his first Pro Stock title by qualifying for the elimination rounds, made the final three sessions Friday and Saturday anticlimactic by putting his Dodge Avenger atop the field with a 6.565 at 210.47.

Andrew Hines put his Harley-Davidson in the top spot in the Pro Stock Motorcycle field with a 6.872 at 196.04, just ahead of the 6.874 at 196.19 turned in by teammate and series points leader Eddie Krawiec.

How does it feel to have your scientific - Retraction Watch - Blog

On May 11 of this year, Juan Antonio Baeza, an environmental engineering researcher at Universitat Autonoma Barcelona was looking for papers in Water Research about knowledge-based systems, the subject of his 1999 PhD thesis. As he tells Retraction Watch, when he came across ?Improving the efficiencies of simultaneous organic substance and nitrogen removal in a multi-stage loop membrane bioreactor-based PWWTP using an on-line Knowledge-Based Expert System?:

I started to read this paper and some sentences of the abstract were interesting,? well, really I thought that I would have written that with the same words! But after reading some parts of the paper I realized that those were really my words of a previous paper published in the same journal in 2002.

I started to compare it and around 40-50% of the paper was a direct copy of my paper without changing even a comma.

So he wrote to the journal on May 14:

We have detected a clear case of plagiarism in one of my papers published in Water Research. The authors have copied the whole structure and large sections of ?text, including parts of the abstract and the conclusions. In addition, they didn?t cite the original reference. We even think that they really didn?t do some software developments they write. The development of expert systems with Gensym G2 is not really usual in WWTP, and they write that their software is practically the same. Even they refer to FIA and CFA (page 5273), very specific analysers not defined in their materials and methods sections. Other parts of the introduction (page 5267) are copied literally from other articles as Pu?al et al (2002).

In a first revision, we have highlighted all the parts of the manuscript copied literally from our work. You will see that approximately 40% of the paper has been copied. The conclusions are 95% equal.

The journal responded the same day, saying they?d forwarded the email to the editor, Mark van Loosdrecht, who in turn responded on May 23 saying they were studying the case. On June 26, van Loosdrecht contacted Baeza again to say he?d been in touch with the authors and had requested that Elsevier, Water Research?s publisher, retract the paper. On October 23, the editor confirmed it would be retracted, and the notice appeared the next day:

This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/withdrawalpolicy).

This article has been retracted at the request of the Editor-in-Chief.

This article has been retracted because it has been using a previous published paper as template without making reference to this previous work. The original work can be consulted at http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0043-1354(01)00402-X.

One of the conditions of submission of a paper for publication is that authors declare explicitly that their work is original and has not appeared in a publication elsewhere. Re-use of any text should be appropriately cited. As such this article represents a severe abuse of the scientific publishing system. The scientific community takes a very strong view on this matter and apologies are offered to readers of the journal that this was not detected during the submission process.

The paper has been cited three times, according to Google Scholar. Baeza said:

So finally the retraction process was 5 months. I don?t know if it is too much or I?ve been lucky.

In our experience, five months is pretty quick, and the journal certainly seems to have taken this as seriously as we?d hope a journal would. Read another example of what it feels like to have your work plagiarized here.

Stocks slide as Europe slashes its growth forecast

Stocks are opening sharply lower on Wall Street following the presidential election and dire warnings from Europe that a broad recession there is now all but certain.

Index futures had been higher early Wednesday but reversed course after the European Union slashed its growth forecast for next year, sending European stock markets sharply lower.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 196 points to 13,046 points shortly after the opening bell.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 17 points to 1,411 and the Nasdaq composite was off 37 points at 2,974.

European markets gave up early gains and turned sharply lower. Investors are also worried about what Washington will do about looming tax increases and government spending cuts.

Removing Soggy Drywall in 8 Not-So-Easy Steps

Step One: Mark

The water line (the highest point that floodwaters reached) will be evident on the drywall. Mark a cut line six to 12 inches above that using either a laser level or marking around the room at a uniform height above the floor. Then snap a chalk line. This might seem unnecessarily fussy at this point when all you?re trying to do is remove soggy drywall to ventilate the wall. But a neat job now will greatly speed the installation of replacement drywall.

Step Two: Place Tarps

Place a tarp at the base of the wall to catch debris. The tarp is a smooth surface that will keep the damaged area cleaner and make it easier to scoop debris off the floor.

Step Three: Cut

Cut along the line with a sharp utility knife.

Step Four: Puncture

Take a framing hammer and knock a hole in the drywall that will allow you to reach through to the other side. Make sure you do this between the studs, and below the cutline so that you?re damaging the drywall that you?re going to remove anyway.

Step Five: Remove and Test

First, remove the plates from your electrical outlets and pry off baseboard trim. Next, wearing gloves, reach into the hand hole and pull the drywall away from the studs. The first couple of bays will be difficult. Once you?ve opened a large area, use a flat bar, hammer, or a flat-nosed shovel to pry the drywall away from the studs.

While you?re doing this, check for dampness on the exterior walls. Get your hand in the insulation. Your goal here is to remove the drywall up to the point where the insulation is dry, so that anything that gets damp is replaced. So if the insulation still feels wet where you made your first cut line, make another test cut higher up the wall.

NOTE: Removal of electrical cable, outlets, and outlet boxes (and their replacement) should be left to a licensed electrician.

Step Six: Transport

Transport the debris outside. The ideal is that you already have a Dumpster, dump truck, or garbage hauler so that you won?t have to remove the debris twice. If that?s not possible, pile the debris on the ground and cover it with a tarp to keep it from getting wetter and heavier. Weigh the tarp down or stake it in place do it doesn?t blow away.

Remember that drywall is heavy?especially waterlogged drywall. But there are several ways to move it. One is to slide it inside a tarp. Large chunks can also be placed in a wheelbarrow or dropped into a plastic garbage can, which you can slide out of the house or carry on a hand truck.

Whatever you do, figure out debris transport before you cut your first piece of drywall and you?ll have an easier time overall.

Step Seven: Dispose of the Remainder

Cut away soggy fiberglass insulation and stuff it into contractor trash bags. Remove drywall screws by backing them out or snapping them off. Same goes for drywall nails.

Step Eight: Ventilate

Fans speed evaporation and reduce the chance of condensation forming inside walls and the formation of mold.

Post-Flood Installation

To put your walls back together after the flood, you'll need to have an electrician replace outlets and wiring, and perhaps the receptacle boxes as well. At PM, it's always been our view that a homeowner who does his or her homework is competent to do basic electrical work, but flood damage is a special case. Flood-damaged electrical materials should be replaced by a pro, who can also evaluate the home's grounding and bonding system. After that's done, you can move on to replacing the insulation you cut out and hanging new drywall.

To do that, cut each piece of replacement insulation so that it firmly butts against the piece above. Staple it in place. Next, cut the replacement piece of drywall and screw it to the studs. Use one screw on each side of the joint (that is, one screw in the new drywall and one screw on the older piece of drywall above). Spread taping compound on the seam and embed paper tape in the compound. Properly embedded paper tape is strong and easy to apply. Strike off excess drywall compound with a 6 in. knife and let the compound dry. Sand off ridges and bumps before applying the next layers of compound.

For plenty more on installing drywall, check out our guides to doing it well and finishing it right.

Prostate cancer prognosis hope | Science Codex

Scientists have discovered a molecular 'tell' in laboratory experiments that could help doctors determine the severity of a patient's prostate cancer.

Cancer of the prostate ? the most common male cancer in the UK ? presents in two distinct ways: a low-risk type, which may never cause any symptoms, and a high-risk form that needs treatment to prevent it spreading to other parts of the body.

Knowing which type of prostate cancer each patient has ? some 40,000 British men per year ? is therefore essential to ensuring they receive the correct treatment.

Lead researcher Dr Angeliki Malliri, from the University of Manchester's Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, said: "Prognosis tells, or biomarkers, give doctors an indication of how a patient will fare after treatment. In prostate cancer, biomarkers that help differentiate between the low-risk and high-risk types of cancer are crucial to decide if and what type of treatment a patient needs."

The study, funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the journal Nature Cell Biology, identified the protein ?2-syntrophin as a new prognosis marker for prostate cancer. The team, part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC), discovered that the protein is involved in establishing tight connections between cells, which are crucial for holding them together to maintain tissue structure and prevent tumours from spreading.

Co-author Dr Natalie Mack said: "We showed that when ?2-syntrophin is lost from these cell-to-cell connections, the cells become disorganised and this is what happens in cells from prostate cancer samples, potentially helping them to spread.

"Our findings indicate that the loss of ?2-syntrophin at cell-to-cell connections in the prostate is an indicator of prostate cancer progression and patients with reduced levels of this protein at these cell-to-cell connections are more likely to have a recurrence of their cancer after treatment."

The authors say their results suggest that ?2-syntrophin is a new prognosis marker in prostate cancer and that it should be further explored to distinguish between low- and high-risk level disease. Improved understanding and use of prognosis markers is essential to help guide clinical decisions and to ensure that patients get the best type of treatment for their type of cancer.

Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said: "To treat prostate cancer more effectively, we need to understand more about how the disease develops and how to recognise more advanced types. This research provides another piece of the puzzle and further work will confirm whether this molecule could be useful in making better predictions about prostate cancer."
