From the Stacks: Fall Sneak Preview! | Toronto Botanical Garden

Get ready for a dynamic and event-filled fall at the Weston Family Library! We have been busy this summer preparing for an exciting new season of activities and programs, and here?s a sneak peak at what we?ve cooked up. Below are some of the main programs and events that are taking place in the Weston Family Library this fall:

Storytime continues every Monday morning from 11:00 to 11:30. It?s free and no registration is required. Drop into the Library with your child for a lively and entertaining reading extravaganza. For ages 0-3 (or so).

Art Gallery Opening September 27th 2012, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Join us to celebrate the opening of the TBG Art Gallery in its new home, the Weston Family Library! The opening exhibition will feature works by two artists, Jean Johnson and Penelope Stewart. Together, we?ll toast the artists with free wine and nibblies!

The TBG Art Gallery will be open throughout the year during library hours, with changing exhibitions by various artists rotating every three months. The Library is thrilled to be the new home of the TBG Art Gallery, and our convenient and accessible location and bright, open and inviting space make it a natural fit. For more information on the Art Gallery Opening, please see the Fall 2012 Program Guide.

New Library Catalogue
I am very excited to announce the unveiling of the Weston Family Library?s brand new Library catalogue. This important development has been in the works and under construction for many months, and this fall it will finally be ready for use. When I arrived at the TBG in January, one of the major grievances from volunteers, staff, and most importantly, library users, was the catalogue, which had become clunky, difficult, and incompatible with our new website. Stay tuned for more updates this fall. The new catalogue will feature:

  • Intuitive functionality and self-service tools such as the ability to renew books online, place holds, and search the catalogue from home;
  • Thumbnail preview of an item?s bookjacket in search results;
  • An overall snazzy, contemporary look.

Gardening on the Web

Last winter I offered a series of computer courses in the Weston Family Library called Gardening on the Web. The series focused on web-literacy and instruction for using online resources to locate gardening information. Due to the popularity of these courses, they will be offered again this fall with more sessions for each of the three courses in the series. The first course, ?Covering the Basics,? offers a broad introduction to using the Internet, but also serves as an introduction to various web browsers, search engines, and basic tools. The second course in the series, ?Searching the Web,? delves deeper into web searching using a wide range of free online horticultural resources (such as digitallibrarycollections, databases, social media, etc.). ?Gardening Blogs & Blogging? is the third course in the Gardening on the Web series, and is an opportunity to learn how to find gardening blogs and to create your very own. Blogging platforms and their tools will be explored to help you maximize your web output.

HortiCULTURE Salon Series continues on September 19th with Margaret Nevett speaking about Horticulture as Therapy. Not to be missed!

Lastly, I?m very excited to announce that the TBG and Weston Family Library will be present at Toronto?s annual?Word on the Street, September 23rd, 2012. Word on the Street is a literary festival that celebrates reading, publishing, libraries, and everything to do with literacy. It takes place at Queen?s Park Circle, and this year has expanded its site to cover College to Bloor. It is always a great time, and I hope to see you out there!
