Republican divisions may hinder party's momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A string of unrelated events is highlighting divisions among Republicans just when they'd like to show a united front and take full advantage of President Barack Obama's latest political problems.

Tensions between libertarian-leaning and more mainstream Republicans were on vivid display Tuesday as Sens. Rand Paul and John McCain clashed over Apple Inc.'s tax-avoidance strategies. Paul, a tea party favorite and son of a libertarian hero, had feuded earlier with McCain ? the party's 2008 presidential nominee ? over the use of unmanned aircraft to kill suspected terrorists.

Meanwhile, an immigration plan that's backed by Obama and many establishment Republicans appears closer to a showdown with wary House conservatives. And Oklahoma's deadly tornado threatened to reopen a painful intra-GOP debate over the wisdom of borrowing money to help storm victims.

All political parties have their divisions, of course. It's possible the controversies dogging the White House will play a much bigger role in next year's elections than will Republican disagreements.

Moreover, mainstream and tea party Republicans joined forces in 2010 ? the last midterm election ? to lift the party to huge congressional and gubernatorial victories. It's entirely possible they will do it again next year.

But the rise of nonestablishment Republicans, such as Paul of Kentucky and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, underlines the party's continued struggle to resolve basic philosophical differences after losing four of the last six presidential elections.

Paul is drawing national attention, having made a major speech to Iowa Republicans and visiting other early primary states as he weighs a presidential run. He renewed his advocacy of libertarian principles Tuesday at a Senate hearing into Apple's multinational strategies to avoid paying billions of dollars in U.S. taxes.

Most senators either rebuked Apple or at least questioned its tactics. McCain said: "For years, Apple has opted to forgo fully contributing to the U.S. Treasury and to American society by shifting profits and circumventing U.S. taxes. In the last four years alone, Apple has avoided paying taxes on $44 billion in income."

Paul took a strikingly different view. "I'm offended by a $4 trillion government bullying, berating and badgering one of America's greatest success stories," he said. "The Congress should be on trial here for creating a Byzantine and bizarre tax code."

Republicans typically portray themselves as the low-tax or anti-tax party. A serious Paul bid for president, however, could push that argument to levels that might help Democrats paint Republicans as champions of tax evaders.

Also on Tuesday, a high-stakes immigration bill moved closer to a Senate vote. Obama and other Democrats have long sought a way to bring millions of immigrants living here illegally out of the shadows. The Republican establishment backs the idea in hopes of starting to heal the GOP's poor standing with Hispanic voters, a fast-growing group.

It's unclear whether the Republican-run House will embrace the Senate proposal, which would create a pathway to citizenship for many who entered the country illegally.

"There's no bill I've seen that I can support," Rep. Kenny Marchant, R-Texas, said in an interview Tuesday. When his constituents hear explanations of the proposed pathway to citizenship, he said, "they omit that paragraph and pencil in 'amnesty.'"

Even if Congress passes an immigration overhaul, opponents' remarks in the upcoming Senate and House debates could offer sound bites and video clips that Democrats can use to depict Republicans as hostile to Hispanics.

Monday's devastating tornado near Oklahoma City prompted widespread expressions of sadness and condolences in Congress. But it also was a reminder of tensions among Republicans regarding disaster relief and deficit spending.

After sometimes fierce debate, most House Republicans voted in January against a $50.5 billion bill that primarily helped victims of Superstorm Sandy. The bill passed with mostly Democratic support.

Republican opponents noted that the bill included non-Sandy spending items, and it added to the federal deficit because, like most disaster relief measures, it was not offset by spending cuts elsewhere. Those arguments infuriated some Republicans, including Rep. Peter King of New York. He said Congress has a long tradition of helping disaster victims without demanding it be paid for immediately.

The debate threatened to resurface Tuesday, although it's possible that current disaster funds can handle Oklahoma's needs without new congressional appropriations.

GOP Rep. Tom Cole, who lives in the hard-hit town of Moore, Okla., told National Public Radio his state will need federal help and he's proud he voted for the Sandy relief bill.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., differed on the Sandy bill and took a defensive stance. His office said "if an additional emergency aid package is necessary," Coburn will not change his long-held view that "supplemental bills should be paid for by reducing spending on less vital priorities."

More divisive issues may be heading toward the Republican caucus. Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., plans to introduce a bill to ban abortions nationwide after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood called the proposal outrageous, adding, "Voters and the courts agree that decisions about a woman's pregnancy are not for an Arizona congressman or any other politician to make."

Anti-abortion initiatives are generally popular with the GOP's stalwart supporters. Whether they hinder efforts to reach crucial independent voters, however, is a question that worries campaign consultants eager to find a formula for electing Republican presidents.

Washington University in St. Louis announced today that it is a Grand Challenges Explorations winner, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Tae Seok Moon, PhD, assistant professor of energy, environmental & chemical engineering, will pursue an innovative global health and development research project titled "Programmed Killing of Parasite Eggs by Probiotic Organisms."

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) funds individuals worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how we solve persistent global health and development challenges. Moon's project is one of the Grand Challenges Explorations Round 10 grants announced May 21 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

To receive funding, Moon and other Grand Challenges Explorations Round 10 winners demonstrated in a two-page online application a bold idea in one of four critical global heath and development topic areas that included agriculture development, neglected tropical diseases and communications. Applications for the next round will be accepted starting September 2013.

Moon's project addresses parasite infection in people in developing countries. While there are drugs to help kill parasite worms and eggs in the body, there is no long-term strategy to prevent disease transmission. Moon has proposed to engineer probiotic bacteria that would be added to donated foods, reproduce in the intestine where parasite eggs are produced, and come out of the body with the eggs in waste.

The probiotic bacteria contain a genetic circuit, or a computer, which distinguishes the outside conditions from those in the human body. Once the bacteria come out of the human body with the eggs, the genetic circuit triggers a "suicide bomb," killing the parasite eggs and the bacteria in the process, eliminating any potential harm to humans or to the environment.

Moon, who joined the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis in July 2012, directs his research toward creating programmable cells that process multiple input signals and produce desirable outputs for real-world applications. An expert in the design and construction of genetic circuits, he aims to build synthetic gene circuits to control and improve cellular processes.

Combining his research experiences with more than five years of experience in the biotechnology industry, he envisions his career as transforming biology research from an "observation" approach to a "synthesis-based engineering" activity to address energy, environment and health issues.

'Whodunnit' of Irish potato famine solved

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

It is the first time scientists have decoded the genome of a plant pathogen and its plant host from dried herbarium samples. This opens up a new area of research to understand how pathogens evolve and how human activity impacts the spread of plant disease.

Phytophthora infestans changed the course of history. Even today, the Irish population has still not recovered to pre-famine levels. "We have finally discovered the identity of the exact strain that caused all this havoc", says Hern?n Burbano from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology.

For research to be published in eLife, a team of molecular biologists from Europe and the US reconstructed the spread of the potato blight pathogen from dried plants. Although these were 170 to 120 years old, they were found to have many intact pieces of DNA.

"Herbaria represent a rich and untapped source from which we can learn a tremendous amount about the historical distribution of plants and their pests - and also about the history of the people who grew these plants," according to Kentaro Yoshida from The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich.

The researchers examined the historical spread of the fungus-like oomycete Phytophthora infestans, known as the Irish potato famine pathogen. A strain called US-1 was long thought to have been the cause of the fatal outbreak. The current study concludes that a strain new to science was responsible. While more closely related to the US-1 strain than to other modern strains, it is unique. "Both strains seem to have separated from each other only years before the first major outbreak in Europe," says Burbano.

The researchers compared the historic samples with modern strains from Europe, Africa and the Americas as well as two closely related Phytophthora species. The scientists were able to estimate with confidence when the various Phytophthora strains diverged from each other during evolutionary time. The HERB-1 strain of Phytophthora infestans likely emerged in the early 1800s and continued its global conquest throughout the 19th century. Only in the twentieth century, after new potato varieties were introduced, was HERB-1 replaced by another Phytophthora infestans strain, US-1.

The scientists found several connections with historic events. The first contact between Europeans and Americans in Mexico in the sixteenth century coincides with a remarkable increase in the genetic diversity of Phytophthora. The social upheaval during that time may have led to a spread of the pathogen from its center of origin in Toluca Valley, Mexico. This in turn would have accelerated its evolution.

The international team came to these conclusions after deciphering the entire genomes of 11 historical samples of Phytophthora infestans from potato leaves collected over more than 50 years. These came from Ireland, the UK, Europe and North America and had been preserved in the herbaria of the Botanical State Collection Munich and the Kew Gardens in London.

"Both herbaria placed a great deal of confidence in our abilities and were very generous in providing the dried plants," said Marco Thines from the Senckenberg Museum and Goethe University in Frankfurt, one of the co-authors of this study. "The degree of DNA preservation in the herbarium samples really surprised us," adds Johannes Krause from the University of T?bingen, another co-author. Because of the remarkable DNA quality and quantity in the herbarium samples, the research team could evaluate the entire genome of Phytophthora infestans and its host, the potato, within just a few weeks.

Crop breeding methods may impact on the evolution of pathogens. This study directly documents the effect of plant breeding on the genetic makeup of a pathogen.

"Perhaps this strain became extinct when the first resistant potato varieties were bred at the beginning of the twentieth century," speculates Yoshida. "What is for certain is that these findings will greatly help us to understand the dynamics of emerging pathogens. This type of work paves the way for the discovery of many more treasures of knowledge hidden in herbaria."

EA shows first Xbox One games FIFA, NBA Live, Madden and UFC

EA teased hours ago that FIFA 14 would be one of the first Xbox One games, but it just used Microsoft's event to unveil a considerably wider slate. FIFA 14, NBA Live 14, Madden 25 and EA Sports UFC are all coming to the new console within the next 12 months. All of them are using a new engine, EA Sports Ignite, that has 10 times the animation detail, smarter artificial intelligence, 3D crowds, "living" sidelines and a daily dose of new content through Xbox Live. EA and Microsoft are getting cozier with the deal, too -- FIFA 14 Ultimate Team will be an Xbox exclusive. We'll have to wait for more detail about that game later this year, but it's safe to say that Microsoft won't be lacking for major sports titles during the Xbox One's vital first year.

G Data InternetSecurity 2014

We're almost five months into 2013, and you know what that means, right? Yes, it's time for the 2014 security product lines to appear! G Data InternetSecurity 2014 is the first security suite I've reviewed that has 2014 in its name, but others will be along soon enough.

At $44.95 for three licenses, G Data costs less than many of its competitors. Even Ad-Aware Pro Security 10.5 costs $48. And G Data comes with a full complement of suite features, adding the antispam and parental control components that Ad-Aware lacks. Some of the components work very well, others aren't quite as impressive.

New Interface
G Data's 2014 product line boasts a brand-new user interface with big, touch-friendly buttons that select among five important pages: SecurityCenter, Virus protection, Firewall, Parental controls, and Autostart Manager. Many security products use a green banner when everything's fine, changing to yellow or red if there's a problem. G Data's window is always red across the top, but icons on the SecurityCenter page change to point out areas needing attention.

G Data AntiVirus 2014 shares a lot with this suite. It has the exact same SecurityCenter, Virus protection, and Autostart Manager pages; it just lacks Firewall and Parental controls.

Mixed Antivirus Protection
Since the antivirus component of this suite has exactly the same capabilities as G Data AntiVirus 2014, I'll simply summarize my findings here. You can get full details in my review of the antivirus.

I hit some snags during G Data's cleanup of my twelve malware-infested test systems. The antivirus scanner mistakenly quarantined some essential Windows files, leaving two of the systems unbootable. Recovery required use of the G Data Boot Medium, a German keyboard layout chart, and a cram course in Linux. Whew!

G Data scored poorly in my malware removal test, with a detection rate of 58 percent and an overall score of 4.3 points, both values the lowest of all products tested using my current malware collection. Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security scored best in this group, with 6.0 points, though Ad-Aware Pro's 83 percent detection rate was highest.

Tested against my previous malware collection, Norton Internet Security (2013), Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013, and Comodo Internet Security Complete 2013 all scored 6.6 points. For details on this test's methodology, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

G Data fared much better in my malware blocking test, detecting 92 percent of the samples and scoring 9.2 points. Only Ad-Aware Pro scored better against the same samples, with 94 percent detection and 9.4 points. Webroot did best among products tested with the previous collection, scoring a near-perfect 9.9 points. For a full explanation of this malware blocking test, see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

When I tried to download the same malware samples again, G Data blocked all access to many at the URL level. It wiped out others during the course of the download process. Its behavior blocker properly left valid PCMag utilities alone while blocking actual malware.

The independent testing labs give G Data's technology good marks overall. It scored especially well in tests by AV-Comparatives, earning ADVANCED+ (the top rating) in two tests and ADVANCED in a third. Note, though, that Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 earned top marks from all of the labs I follow. For more about the labs and the tests they run, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests

Erupting Alaska volcano spews ash, disrupts air travel

By Yereth Rosen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - One of Alaska's most active volcanoes, which has been belching ash and spewing lava since last week, has forced regional flight cancellations and dusted some nearby communities with ash, scientists and local officials said on Monday.

Pavlof Volcano has sent up ash as high as 22,000 feet, with the cloud blowing eastward and the eruption showing no signs of abating, according to the federal-state Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The lava from its 8,261-foot (2,518-metre) peak has also created huge steam clouds on meeting the mountain's snow.

While the ash plume was still too low on Monday to affect commercial airliners flying at least 30,000 feet above sea level between Asia and North America, it was scrambling schedules for regional carriers serving rural fishing towns and native villages that lack outside road access.

PenAir, an Anchorage-based Alaska company specializing in travel in southwestern Alaska, briefly stopped flights to four destinations to wait for ash to dissipate, said Danny Seybert, the carrier's chief executive. "We've had about a dozen cancellations due to the volcano," he said.

PenAir's planes fly at altitudes between 15,000 and 20,000 feet, exactly where they could encounter ash, depending on wind direction, Seybert said.

Among the cancellations were flights in and out of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, the top-volume seafood port in the United States, he said.

Ash plumes could go higher, as Pavlof's eruption could intensify with little warning, the Alaska Volcano Observatory said.

Trace amounts of ash fell overnight on Nelson Lagoon, a tiny Aleut village of 50 residents located 48 miles northeast of Pavlof. The volcano had earlier sprinkled ash on Sand Point, a fishing town of about 1,000 people, when the wind was blowing in a slightly different direction, according to the observatory.

Along with potential aviation hazards, the ash poses possible health risks, said Rick Wessels, a U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist at the observatory.

"It's dangerous for the people downwind of it, because you don't really want to breathe in that fine ash that long," Wessels said of the eruption taking place on the Alaska Peninsula, 590 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Pavlof is one of Alaska's most restless volcanoes and had its last major eruption in 2007. The Alaska Volcano Observatory estimates it has erupted about two dozen times between 1901 and 2007.

Israel gunman shoots 4 dead at bank, kills self

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A gunman stormed into a bank in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba Monday, killing four people in a gunfight and taking a hostage before killing himself, police said.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the shootings happened inside the bank, which was cordoned off with a large number of police. Israeli TV footage showed several ambulances parked outside. Four other people were wounded, one of them seriously.

Police said they were investigating the incident and backed off from initial claims that it had been a bungled bank robbery.

"We are not convinced entirely at this point that we are talking about a robbery or an attempted robbery but it could be we are talking about an incident where from the start, the murderer came in with an intention to shoot," national police chief Yohanan Danino told reporters.

The man was identified as an Israeli in his 40s who lived in Beersheba.

The bank specialized in mortgages, and Rosenfeld said police were exploring whether the man had experienced financial difficulties or had any other personal dispute with bank workers. He said robbery also remained a possible motive.

Rosenfeld said a gunfight broke out and the robber took one hostage, but as a standoff developed, he killed himself. The hostage, who was lightly wounded, walked out of the bank, Rosenfeld added.

He said police looked into the possibility that there had been a second suspect, but ruled that out. He also said police believed all of the dead had been killed by the gunman.

Cast AR handson with Jeri Ellsworth at Maker Faire 2013

When Valve's first hardware hire, Jeri Ellsworth, tweeted back in February that she was fired from the company, we were disappointed but also intrigued by what she meant by "time for new exciting projects." Well we finally saw what she's been up to here at at Maker Faire 2013. It's called Cast AR, and it's a pair of 3D augmented-reality glasses that she and former Valve programmer Rick Johnson were working on at Valve before they left.

The model we saw is still in the early prototype stages, but the concepts are already in place. Perched atop a pair of active shutter glasses are a couple of miniature LCD projectors, which bounce images from a connected computer onto a special reflective surface at a 120Hz refresh rate. A camera module sits on the eyewear's bridge and monitors an array of infrared LEDs embedded in the reflective surface. This allows for quick and accurate head tracking. Join us after the break for our impressions and our video interview with Jeri Ellsworth.

North Korea fires projectile into eastern waters

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea says North Korea has fired a projectile into waters off its eastern coast a day after launching three short-range missiles in the same area.

The South's Defense Ministry says the firing occurred Sunday afternoon. It did not say whether it was a missile or artillery.

North Korea routinely test-launches short-range missiles.

The launches come during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing tension on the Korean Peninsula. The U.S. responded to the previous day's launches by saying threats or provocations would only further deepen North Korea's international isolation, while South Korea urged the North to take responsible actions.

Earlier this year, North Korea threatened to attack South Korea and the U.S. to protest annual joint military drills and U.N. sanctions imposed after its February nuclear test.

The IRS targeted tea party groups. Did liberal groups get better treatment?

Today marks the one-week anniversary of the Internal Revenue Service's disclosure that it improperly scrutinized certain conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status. As an inspector general report on the practice found, groups with phrases like "tea party," "patriots" and "9/12 project" were targeted for the "Be On the Look Out" or "BOLO" list, and often ended up waiting two years for notice on their status.

Somewhat lost in the furor over the disclosure is that very few liberal organizations appear to have been approved either. There is no evidence that groups with words like "progressive" or "Democratic" were targeted. But the numbers do suggest that the universe of nonprofit political organizations is small, and that liberal groups were not approved in droves while conservative ones were subject to endless bureaucratic rigmarole.

The IRS publishes a master database of all tax-exempt organizations, so it's possible to see how many groups with these words in their names were approved each month. As the Washington Post demonstrated on Wednesday, there was not a single organization with "tea party" in the name approved in 2011. In 2012, 26 groups were approved.

According to the IRS database, there were 1,017 "social welfare organizations" approved for tax-exempt status in 2012. In IRS-speak, that's a 501c(4) organization of classification type 3. Donations to such groups are not tax-deductable, and they are often not required to disclose donors.

Of those, 28 have the words "tea party" or "patriots" in their name. Only seven have the word "progress": Louisiana Progress Action Fund Inc., Progress Missouri, Progress Texas, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada Action Fund, Progressive USA, Progressives United Inc., Progressnow. There are no matches for "liberal" or "Democrat." The complete list is at the end of this post.

Limiting the search to social welfare organizations is not the only way to compare liberal and conservative organizations. The Washington Post found that there were 30 groups with "progressive" in their name approved in 2012 by filtering all IRS records by the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities code, which classifies nonprofits into sectors like "civil rights, social action, advocacy" and "community improvement, capacity building," among many others. This is arguably a more comprehensive approach than limiting the data to 501(c)4(3) organizations, but it also is more likely to include groups that are not explicitly politically oriented.

Even by this more permissive metric, progressive organizations did not appear to receive special treatment compared to conservative ones, judging only by the numbers of organizations that were approved. That does not absolve the IRS from clearly inappropriate behavior. Nor does it suggest that the other side of the aisle had a massive advantage due to the violation.

I'm not too far gone yet weight wise, but I'm heading there. Just calculated my body fat and at 35% which isn't good, and BMI is borderline overweight. So I know I *should* get fit, I just can't stand it!!!!!

I can't stand being out of breath and gasping for air (happens very very fast even after working out for months, actually think I have exercise induced asthma which would be useful to get checked out)
I can't stand the pain when your muscles are struggling
or the weakness from being so tired
But worse of all, I absolutely cannot handle the muscle soreness afterwords.

This has been an issue all my life, and since you guys are fellow aspies, and more prone to hypersensitiveness I was wondering if there was any tips to get around this stuff.

I'm a lazy brat so forcing myself out there is going to be REALLY REALLY HARD. And likely will give up. :X
I would force myself every semester while in college to take 1-2 gym courses just to get some sort of physical activity in.

I have taken karate, fitness walking, fencing, archery, rock climbing, on my own I've also done a lot of badminton (work), jump rope, running, weight lifting, rowing machine, tredmill, etc. I'm a fairly good swimmer too.... laser tag is a huge workout too I've discovered.

I'm competitive beyond belief and that is the sole thing that gets me through any of it, running? Find someone faster and chase after, must win!

Unfortunately I can't handle "going slow." Doing x activity for y minutes... always feel a need to go faster faster faster, see how fast I can get this done, or must lift this weight 10x so lift as fast as possible, even though I know that you're supposed to do slow, I just can't stand the activity so much I want it done asap.

So I'm at a loss. I have done all those activities, and while some are fun, the drawbacks of them make me unable to force myself to continue.

There really are few things in this world I hate more than exercise... (oh yeah, to make things worse I have serious RLS pain happen after I run (happens on its own as well but rarely anymore, but always when I run))

What is a good way for me to get even a little more fit? Small things like parking father away and walking in I can do (though often forget), but what else?
If it is an activity it's likely going to have to be competitive...
I want to learn martial arts, but the countless reps were driving me insane in karate, is there one that is more bout oriented and can actually work to "defeat" someone and "win" more often? Fencing had a lot more bouts than my karate class ever did, so considering that.
How do I keep myself to keep going and doing it?
And for the love of god, how the hell do I stop feeling so shitty!?!!!
I've taken advil/motrin, I've tried hot baths, cold showers, stretching before, stretching after, stretching day after, etc and can't seem to get rid of it or tolerate it (last week I had moved a 100lb and 50lb bed and frame myself 3x that day, the next 6 days were hell. The day after was so bad I went home early from work and went straight to sleep to sleep through it x.x)

There are many ways to excercise. I have asthma and I also struggle with my hand-to-eye coordination because of my Asperger's syndrome. It didn't stop me from getting to a 300 lb bench press in just a year.

Your first exercises are going to be that way. If the problem persists, it means that you're not eating enough protein. Contrary to popular belief spred by envious pseudointellectuals, bread and butter won't give you nearly enough protein to actually get any results.

Get a structured exercise routine. F*cking around with randomly selected exercises on randomly selected days with a randomly selected level of intensity will get you nowhere. Smile

Protein shakes are a good start.

With running, a walk/run routine is more efficient than steady jogging. Walk a ways, sprint from point to point, then walk again. It won't take long before you find that you're sprinting faster and walking further.

With exercise in general, what stopped me for a long time was fear. Fear of trying to do something, like 20 good push-ups, and failing. You almost have to forgive yourself first before you start any program, because you have to be your own cheerleader, not your own critic. Remember, exercise, no matter how short or easy, is always worth it. Don't tell yourself that if you don't spend at least 2 hours non stop at the gym it isn't worth going. Even if you just do 10 push-ups and call it a day, do them.

The protein tip is good, I would do semester long batches so know that it isn't just the starting sorenesses
Like the semester I took fencing I would do fencing 2-3x a week and another 2-3x a week of running, weight lifting, and rowing machine... was in pain that entire semester and just hated life even more.

Structure may help a little, but I'm notorious for giving up things and not sticking to them... only reason managed the previous years was because grades were dependant on going to class :X

And yeah I do "run/walk"... because walking is too boring and running too tiring, so it's sprint, then walk until can breath again, then sprint, etc... XD

And yes, I agree with the mental thing, and yes drink a lot of water actually and no to other person, I don't eat well either... planning on trying to sneak a little more health in, but these are both mutually difficult things :X

Also, curious, thought came while reading one of your articles about hardwired to hate it:

Asthma means you aren't getting enough oxygen to your cells basically, right? I assumed that it could be because I'm borderline anemic, but took iron suppliments (w/ vitamin c to absorb better) in attempt to stave off RLS pain (failed attempt, but tried nevertheless). I didn't find it helped my perceived death by gasping fish syndrome, but if it was asthma and not getting enough oxygen... could lack of oxygen while working out lead to increased muscle soreness?

A balanced diet can improve your mental state.

Cycling is better than running in my opinion, less impact on the leg joints.

With martial arts finding the right class or teacher can make a massive difference. Most Karate styles are fairly rigid in structure. Different arts will incorporate sparing into the classes earlier, you just need to try some out. The best class I attended was Tai Chi, due to the teacher, half the time spent in contact exercises. All styles do require time and effort to study the set forms though, you can expect to improve without the fundamentals.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot

The reason I think I have the asthma thing is because (and I know this is a clear sign of trying too hard) I will get to the point where my hearing gets duller until can't hear at all and...will continue until I lose all color vision ^^;;; This has been happening on/off since middle school, and wasn't nearly as lazy then as I am now (and better diet and fitness/bodyfat too was actually underweight when started college, oh how things have gone down hill)

Just frustrating when people (appear, obviously not since the state I'm in) are worse off than you and can keep going and you're about to pass out XD

OK, so addressing the impatience aspect is part of your exercise program. Impatience management. I can say I know something about that! Laughing

Pretty sure it does. My memory is vague here, but when the body goes into anaerobic mode during exercise, muscle tissue gets broken down & lactic acid & other toxins increase, causing muscle soreness. So because of your reduced lung capacity, you may go over the oxygen threshold much sooner than average.

You might also have some dietary inflammatory stuff happening...are you celiac & not watching what you eat very carefully? Or other dietary autoimmune issues?

Yes try Aikido if you have a class local, try anything until you find the right thing.

Karate is great if you are going to devote your life to it.

Have you spoken to a doctor about the asthma and anemia? Any blood tests?

Anemia has come up w/ me and the doctors which is why I tried iron supplements, asthma has not... *mumbles* needa find new doctor, last one tried sending me to a mental hospital /grudge (depression, badly, which is reason I care more about exercising for weight rather than just dieting, because it's *supposed* to be good for you)

Like what?

And I just eat a lot of crappy foods... mutual love for each other and all, not allergic to anything though intense distaste to many Razz or not eat, often too tired/lazy to eat after work, so its often an (unhealthy) snack or nothing

Sounds like the quickest "fix" to being able to tolerate this stuff is seeing dr... if I can simply breathe may be able to tolerate the soreness *tries convincing herself things really will get better*

I meditate--there are various kinds: walking, standing, sitting & lying down--& I really feel the repeated letting go of the thought & returning to the breath is basically a patience practice. Not to mention all the marvelous health benefits they keep finding. I could give you some basic instruction if you like or answer questions you might have.

Find a healthy thing & do it. For me a protein shake or smoothie would work. Quick, easy, & can be a real powerhouse of nutrition. Also, assume you're not getting enough sunlight & get your Vit. D levels tested. Strong evidence linking low levels w/depression, etc.

I see this as another try at quick when slow & steady wins the race for you. It's about avoiding pain, making the exercise pleasurable, fun. For you, I think the old adage "No pain, no gain" is a sinker. Assume pain is telling you that you got it WRONG for you. That adage is for people who have a higher pain tolerance or stronger endorphin releases or something. Not for you, I'm thinking.

Or me. If it's fun, I'll do it. If it's not fun, I won't. Simple as that. Wink
