Video Game Crafts 'N Gear #24: Portal 2 Frankenturret, Miiverse Art ...

[Welcome again to Video Game Crafts 'N Gear! This is a weekly feature wherein I shine the spotlight on three of the best custom-made, video game-inspired projects I've come across this week. Whatever the game and whether it's art, crafts, toys, cosplay, animations or anything creative, if it's good enough I'll share with you lovely readers!]

Portal 2 Frankenturret

Remember the abominable Frankenturrents, the hybrids of?Storage Cubes and Sentry Turrets in Portal 2? Who could forget, with them hilariously dragging themselves around on little legs. Despite the huge variety of Portal merchandise available (many of which we?ve featured), these mechanical?amalgamation haven?t been brought into the real world ? until now!

Ian Brooks made this fantastic Frankenturret replica, with impeccable accuracy and attention to detail. Its appearance alone is enough to make me throw money at the screen, but that?s not the best part ? at the 40 second mark in the video below, it lives!

It twitches and lights up just as it does in the game, recreating that creepy yet comedic vibe. The kind gentleman also shares how he made it with a ton of work-in-progress shots.

Miiverse Art Exhibit

The Miiverse has become a surprisingly fantastic home for gaming artists. Every time I visit I?m guaranteed a smile at someone?s amazing and clever artwork, which is only made more impressive considering the limitations of simple black and white colours and the restricted size of the GamePad screen. I?m not the only one to notice this undeniable talent, as an art show in Germany proves.

Printing Miiverse is an exhibit that celebrates the amazing art contributions on Nintendo?s social network. It is being held today, May 4th, in?Nuremberg. For the service to gain this high amount of recognition, as well as the opportunity for even non-gamers to experience it is incredible. There?s even a fun Mario-themed trailer below, offering glimpses at all the great images. The video claims that the event collaborates 172 artists and 13255 drawings in total, which is no small feat.

?80s-Style Nintendo Consoles

The Nintendo Entertainment System, neon colours, great music and bad hairtstyles. That?s right, we?re talking about the ?80s, and art doesn?t get more ?80s than this. Retro artist?Rik Oostenbroek?clearly felt Nintendo were too subtle in the designs of the NES and Game Boy, giving them a complete custom make-over dedicated to the colourful decade.

The bright purples, pinks and greens along with the straight neon lines and futuristic approach make these designs incredibly in-your-face and impressive. He even remade the controller and cartridge, going all-out and cramming in detail. If you?re craving more after playing Blood Dragon, check out the gorgeous pictures below!
