Plantar Fasciitis Is a Pain in the Foot

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition of the foot that can limit your ability to walk and run. It is usually felt as a sharp pain on the bottom of the foot near the heel.

Physical therapy management of plantar fasciitis usually involves controlling the inflammatory process in the plantar fascia. Once the inflammation is at a minimum, exercises can be done to help improve the flexibility of the plantar fascia and surrounding musculature.

The position of your foot and arch should also be analyzed if you have plantar fasciitis. You may need to consider arch supports or orthotics to help decrease strain on your plantar fascia.

If you have foot pain and think you may have plantar fasciitis, a visit to your doctor or physical therapist may be in order. He or she can perform a thorough lower extremity assessment and can help provide you with strategies to manage this painful condition.

Aluminum Fishing Boats - Magnificent Boats for You

For people with a certain bend over water sport, especially in fishing, they might consider getting into the hobby and buy a boat. For people who want to get a boat, what is a better boat than aluminum fishing boats? Below is the argument why an aluminum fishing boat is a better choice of others, for an example, a fiberglass boat.

Aluminum fishing boats are one of the choices for a fishing boat among other choices such as a fiberglass fishing boat, and a timber fishing boat. If you go for looks, a timber fishing boat is a very suitable one. Needless to say, a timber fishing boat might be the best boat you can get considering the fact that you dig for the look when you want to get a boat. However, it is not only the looks that matter in a fishing boat. You will also need it to be durable, long lasting, lightweight, and does not consume most of the time maintaining when you are not on the water. If looks included, the most suitable material you can get is aluminum where all of the above variables gather.

Comparing aluminum fishing boats with their timber counterparts, you will find that timber fishing boats are maintenance prone. You will be on your edge and time of sanding timber, varnishing timber, repairing timber and lots more. But it is worth a try as you can have a very good looking fishing boat with all the prices and times that you spend on it. Without doubt, it pays off. However, if you are more of a practical water sport enthusiast, an aluminum fishing boat is more up your alley. It is maintenance friendly, easier to treat and cost efficient. Aluminum fishing boats are also lighter in weight department and you can get a smaller engine to keep it running. Smaller engine means only one thing, smaller payment. With a smaller payment, you can use the money excess somewhere else like, say, fuel and other equipment.

Aluminum fishing boats also are durable and long lasting. A durable and long lasting material will retain the sale value and should you want to sell your boat, you will lose minimum money. Due to the issues above, there is a small difference between buying a new aluminum fishing boat and a used one. The retained value is not that different and you can always sell it at the similar price you buy it. Aluminum fishing boats are a good investment for a water sport enthusiast as it is corrosion resistant. Spending your time a lot on the water will degrade the other boats' condition with different materials fast. The boat is rot, leak and rust resistant and even if there is damage it is easier to fix. The lightweight quality will also consume less power to run and this is certainly a positive point. Maintenance issue may not be as pricey as other boats for the only thing it needs is a regular cleaning and management.

Aluminum fishing boats are perfect not only for fishing, but also for your leisure activities, such as travelling on water or leisurely wad across the calm water. Aluminum fishing boats will also do a good job for fishermen because they are really easy to manage and to control on ocean water. Aluminum fishing boats have a high strength-to-weight ratio which makes it an easy one man job to carry it when it is not on the water. It is also very durable and cost efficient for that matters. Compared to fiberglass fishing boats with breaking issue, aluminum fishing boats' damage only comes in the form of dents and dings, repairable by minimum cost or just a simple hammer job.

Union Co. director of schools back on job after suspension

Union County's director of schools is back on the job.

Wayne Goforth was suspended last October amid budget issues. The board of education accused him of neglecting his duties.

Earlier this year, the board voted to dismiss Goforth. He later sued the four school board members who voted for his suspension, arguing they violated the Open Meetings Act when they met with an attorney before the vote.

At Monday night's meeting, the school board voted to reinstate Goforth.

He says he's happy to be back on the job, and he's looking forward to settling back in .

"I'm looking forward to trying to patch things up and to form a good relationship with the board so that we can further the education of Union County children," he said.

Goforth's contract is effective through June 30. After that, he says his plans are unclear.

Markets falter as focus remains on Spain

LONDON (AP) ? Market trading proved volatile Friday ? the last working day of the quarter ? as investors continued to fret over Spain.

Trading is often complicated at the quarter's end as it is the deadline for certain trades and agreements to be settled. This sometimes involves buying and selling large amounts of stocks at the last minute in order to make a profit on a deal.

"It is end week, end month and end quarter," said Neil MacKinnon, global macro strategist at VTB Capital. "Investors are alert to impending year-end."

Investors also remained cautious over Spain, a day after the country's government announced big spending cuts it hopes will convince potential bailout creditors and investors it has a rock-solid plan to heal its public finances.

The positive momentum generated by Thursday's Spanish budget ground to a halt Friday as investors waited for the results of stress test results into 14 of the country's banks, which are due after European markets close. Rating agency Moody's is also expected to pronounce on its view on Spain's creditworthiness. There are concerns that the agency will downgrade Spain's government debt to junk status.

Craig Erlam, markets analyst at Alpari, said a downgrade to junk status could "create some panic" among holders of Spanish debt that could prompt a sell off and force yields higher.

"The positive side to this is this could accelerate the bailout request," Erlam said. The other 16 countries that use the euro and the European Central Bank are prepared to help Spain financially, should it need it, but Madrid has so far put off a request.

By midday in Europe, shares were mixed, with Madrid's IBEX index underperforming its peers. The IBEX was trading 1.6 percent lower at 7,712. Elsewhere, Germany's DAX was 0.4 percent lower at 7,261 while the CAC-40 in France fell 1 percent to 3,404. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares 0.1 percent lower at 5,775.

Wall Street was posed for a slightly lower open, too, with both Dow futures and the S&P 500 futures down 0.4 percent.

On Thursday, the Spanish government said it planned to cut overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion) in 2013, a move that won a generally positive response in financial markets. Many investors think the cuts will lay the ground for Spain, the fourth largest economy in the eurozone, to seek financial help from fellow countries in the bloc and the European Central Bank.

Earlier this month, the ECB announced a new bond-buying plan largely designed to keep a lid on Spain's borrowing costs. However, Spain would first have to ask for financial aid from fellow eurozone countries.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has balked at doing so, partly because it could require new austerity cuts. The hope is that the new budget measures are enough to stem any further requirements in the event of a request for help.

"Yesterday's news was clearly a move to forestall the kind of punitive measures we saw imposed on Greece and others," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG.

Other financial markets were fairly subdued, with the euro up 0.1 percent at $1.2922 and a barrel of oil up 12 cents at $91.99.

Earlier in Asia, stocks had been buoyed by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,840.38. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.4 percent to 1,996.21. But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.9 percent to 8,870.16, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August.

Mainland Chinese shares rose ahead of an extended holiday next week. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.5 percent to 2,086.17 and the Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.9 percent to 853.83.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 41 cents to $92.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2934 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.59 yen from 77.62 yen.

The first presidential debate: 'Do or die' for Mitt Romney?

Romney is facing immense pressure to decisively win next week's debate against an upward-bound President Obama ? if the debate even matters at this point

The first presidential debate will take place on Oct. 3, and aides to President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are already trying to raise the bar for their opponent's performance: On Thursday, top Romney adviser Beth Myers sent out a memo arguing that Obama is "widely regarded as one of the most talented political communicators in modern history," with eight presidential debates under his belt to Romney's zero. Team Obama set its marker down earlier, with Jim Messina calling Romney "quick, polished, and ready with a punchy attack" thanks to extensive preparation and his victories in the endless GOP primary debates. But as Politico's Jonathan Martin and Maggie Haberman note, Obama is winning right now, so a decisive victory in the first debate "has gone from merely important to critical" for Romney. Is the Denver debate, in fact, "do-or-die time" for the Romney campaign ? and can Romney rise to the challenge?

Romney needs a bounce, and will get one: Romney's party and donors are on the verge of jumping ship, and the first debate is the only scheduled potential game-changer left, says Robert Shrum at The Daily Beast. So for Romney, it's "debate like a champ or see his candidacy wither and die." He's not too quick on his feet, but he's shown himself an able debater and "he does have advantages going in." The biggest one: History. Since 1984, "in the first debate, against an incumbent president, a challenger tends to win."
"How Mitt Romney can win the first debate with Obama"

SEE MORE: All you need to know about every swing state that matters

One debate can't save Romney: It would take a pretty impressive performance to shake up this race, says Michael Cohen at Britain's The Guardian. Does anyone really think that "the gaffe-tastic Romney... has the political chops" to debate his way out of his hole? Or that "no-drama Obama" will make a flub "so grievous and costly that he will open the door to a Romney comeback"? Seriously, unless Obama "uses the debate to unleash a profanity-laced diatribe against the people of Ohio and Florida," Romney's best hope is a small bump in the polls.
"The presidential debate myth: Not the 'game-changer' you might think"

Debates, in general, rarely change anything: In a tight race like this, a small bounce "could be enough to nudge the election in competitive states like Colorado and Ohio," says Tom Curry at NBC News. But political scientists say we have "a tendency to overstate the impact of debates" because they rarely if ever change the outcome of an election. We tend to "fixate on 'telling' moments," like Ronald Reagan's "there you go again" zinger in 1980, but Reagan was already beating Jimmy Carter. A great one-liner will win Romney a place in political lore, but it won't win him the White House.
"Debate will be Romney's chance to alter trajectory of the race"

Nothing fishy about fish oil fortified nutrition bars

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? In today's fast-paced society, consumers often reach for nutrition bars when looking for a healthy on-the-go snack. A new study in the September issue of the Journal of Food Science published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) found that partially replacing canola oil with fish oil in nutrition bars can provide the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids without affecting the taste.

Producers have been hesitant to incorporate fish oil into foods because it tends to give off a fishy taste or smell, therefore requiring additional processing steps to eliminate these unwanted qualities. In the study, four levels of fish oil were evaluated to determine consumer acceptance of fish-oil fortified nutrition bars. The results showed that oat and soy-based nutrition bars fortified with the lowest replacement level (20 percent) of fish oil did not affect consumer acceptance or purchase intent.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are known to lower triglyceride levels and may help with rheumatoid arthritis.

Are Fat Men More Trustworthy?

Photo illustration of Mitt Romney as an obese man.

Photo illustration by Natalie Matthews-Ramo. Photograph of Romney by Nicholas Kamm/AFP/GettyImages. Photograph of large man by Pavel Losevsky/iStockphoto.

Julius Caesar was a chubby-chaser. If Will Shakespeare is to be believed, he would stride about the Forum making his predilections known to all and sundry:

Let me have men about me that are fat,
Sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o' nights.

While fat was where it was at for old Jules, when it came to skinny dudes, he was positively discriminatory:

Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;
He thinks too much; such men are dangerous.

Back in the day, heft was associated with gravitas and power, leadership, and trust. Fat blokes, by their very physiques, projected monumental indestructability. Even when they were rotting with syphilis (Henry VIII) or prone to decapitating their spouses (Henry VIII, again) they were somehow preferable to those malevolent skinny fellows (Richard III). Obese monarchs and porky politicos loomed large on any podium or battlefield, and one imagines that when they delivered speeches their words boomed and reverberated to tremendous effect. Enough to make your jewelry rattle.

It?s hard to imagine a scrawny geezer having the same kind of impact. Imagine if Winston Churchill, instead of looking like Falstaff, were to have resembled Igor Stravinsky, or a Giacometti sculpture. I cannot help feeling his we-will-fight-on-the-beaches addresses to the nation would have been much less comforting.

Today?s landscape is different. Great fat men are thin on the ground. This represents something of a paradox. Obesity rates among the masses are soaring, but there are far fewer rotund bold-facers than there used to be. This is especially true in the world of entertainment. Yes we have Philip Seymour Hoffman?is he fat or just ?husky???and the incredible James Gandolfini, but that?s about it. Some celebs like Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill debuted as fat and then sneakily lost the weight in order to get more roles.

Back when there were fewer overweight people around, being fat was a vaudevillian novelty. Heavyweights like W.C. Fields and Fatty Arbuckle were seen as special and, yes, as a barrel of laughs. As the century progressed, the entertainment industry became jammed-to-bursting with unapologetic tubsters, Hitchcock and Orson Welles among them. The list is a large one: Robert Morley, James Robertson Justice, Stubby Kaye, Rod Steiger, late Brando, y mas.

Here are my top five massively memorable movie moments from the golden age of galloping gourmands:

1. My all-time favorite silver-screen chubster is Sydney Greenstreet of Casablanca fame. No actor today could hold a candle to big Syd, and certainly none are as fat. In addition to being a great character actor, Mr. Greenstreet created a whole new genre: the extremely evil fat man. As the aptly named Mr. Gutman in The Maltese Falcon, he manages to be even more disturbing than Joel Cairo, the perfumed poseur played by Peter Lorre, and was deservedly nominated for an Academy Award for his efforts. The best scene is shot from in under Gutman?s gut:

2. The fabulously fat Syd occupies two of my picks. As Sheriff Titus Semple in Flamingo Road he sets about destroying honky-tonk-gal-made-good Lane Bellamy, played by Joan Crawford. She expresses her gratitude by?there?s no other way to describe it?slapping the shit out of him.

15 things you didn't know about Oktoberfest

Matthias Schrader / AP

Millions of beer drinkers from around the world will come to the Bavarian capital over the next two weeks for the 179th Oktoberfest, which began Sept. 22 and runs until Oct. 7.

By Kaeli Conforti, Budget Travel

Take this quiz and find out how much you really know about Oktoberfest. If you score 11-15, there's a stein in Munich with your name on it! Get 6-10 correct and you might need to review your German before you head to the party. If you score 5 or less, you'll want to grab your lederhosen (or dirndl), hop a flight to Munich and experience the festival firsthand to improve your score.

1. Which country is the home of Oktoberfest?

  • (A) Ireland.
  • (B) Thailand.
  • (C) Germany.
  • (D) Australia.

Answer: C
If you guessed Germany?you're right! Although there are smaller Oktoberfest celebrations all over the world, the main event takes place in Munich, Germany. More than 6 million people attend the city's celebration, making it the biggest beer festival in the world.

2. How should you say ?cheers? at the festival?

  • (A) Salute!
  • (B) Prost!
  • (C) Slainte!
  • (D) Salud!

Answer: B
Raise your stein and say "prost!" before knocking back a lager at Oktoberfest. Another popular phrase is "zum wohl" (tzoom-vohl), meaning "to your health." Wishing good health to your drinking partners is a universal cheer. "Salute" (sah-loo-tay) is the toast of Italy, and say "salud" (sah-lood) when you clink glasses in Spain. "Slainte" (slan-cha) means ?health? in Gaelic.

Related story: Raise a glass (or beer mug) to the Oktoberfest tradition

3. A stein will typically cost you about how much?

  • (A) About 1 euro each.
  • (B) About 9 - 10 euros each.
  • (C) About 25 euros each.
  • (D) About 50 euros each.

Answer: B
It?s not cheap to spend the day drinking at Oktoberfest, with one-liter steins costing around 9.35 euros ($11.77). That's an increase of 35 euro cents over 2011.

4. Which of the following is NOT a food usually associated with Oktoberfest?

  • (A) Hendl (grilled chicken).
  • (B) Brezel (huge pretzels).
  • (C) Shweinshaxe (pork knuckles).
  • (D) Tintenfisch (fried calamari).

Answer: D
It goes without saying that you should pair a giant German soft pretzel (or brezel) with your beer whenever possible, but grilled chicken (hendl) and Bavarian pork knuckles (schweinshaxe) are also popular snacks during the festival. If you're feeling especially adventurous, sample an oxen (osche) dish at the Ochsenbraterei Beer Tent. Guten Appitit!

5. Which animals DO NOT participate in the Oktoberfest Costume and Riflemen's Parade?

  • (A) Cows.
  • (B) Goats.
  • (C) Thoroughbred horses.
  • (D) Llamas.

Answer: D
Thoroughbred horses, cows and goats are featured members of the Oktoberfest Costume and Riflemen's Parade held on the first Sunday of the festival. One of the cultural highlights of the festival, this parade also features (human) marchers dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes. Riflemen, marching bands and floats representing the different Munich breweries travel through the city. Other participants include dancers decorated with flowers, flag throwers and trumpeters that ride on horseback through the streets of Munich. Other cultural events during the festival include an open-air musical showcase with performances by over 400 musicians. The event takes place the second Sunday of the festival on the steps in front of the Bavaria statue in town. The 2012 festival opened Saturday, Sept. 22nd at 10:45 a.m.

6. According to the rules of Oktoberfest, the beer must be?

  • (A) Saluted by the crowd.
  • (B) Aged in a barrel for 15 years.
  • (C) From one of Munich's six breweries.
  • (D) Accompanied by a giant pretzel.

Answer: C
All beer served at the Oktoberfest tents must be from one of Munich's six breweries?Paulaner, Spaten, Hacker-Pschorr, Augustiner, Hofbr?u and L?wenbr?u. The beer must also follow the Reinheitsgebot. This "purity law" was enacted back in 1516 to control beer quality standards, and stipulates rules such as the recipe can only include barley, malt, yeast and hops. Brews contains up to 6 percent alcohol after being fermented and lagered for more than 30 days. At the festival, the beer is served in one-liter mugs full to the brim?Oktoberfest waiters and waitresses can be seen carrying trays with up to 10 mugs at a time! Talk about a balancing act.

7. Why do they call it Oktoberfest if it's really in September?

  • (A) A practical joke to confuse tourists.
  • (B) The weather was better in September.
  • (C) The first one took place in October.
  • (D) Both B & C

Answer: D
The first Oktoberfest did indeed take place in October (Oct. 12, 1810, to be exact). The celebration now takes place in September in part because of better weather conditions. Oktoberfest typically starts the second-to-last Saturday of September and runs through the first Sunday of October (Sept. 22nd ? Oct. 7th in 2012). The celebration has been around for more than 200 years, although because of various wars or disease epidemics that were responsible for cancelling the festival, 2012 marks the 179th celebration.

8. What is the official rallying cry of Oktoberfest?

  • (A) O'zapft is!
  • (B) Sis Boom Bah!
  • (C) Hakuna Matata!
  • (D) Geronimo!

Answer: A
At noon on the first day of Oktoberfest, the mayor of Munich kicks off the celebration by officially tapping the first beer barrel and shouting to the crowd, ?O'zapft is!? meaning, ?It is tapped!? From that moment on, the beer flows and the festival has officially begun. During the festival, beer is served on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 10:30 p.m., and between 9 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. on weekends. Tents officially close down by 11:30 p.m. As of 2011, smoking is banned in the beer tents. Not only will you not be served, but you may also be fined for doing so.

9. True or False: Children are never allowed in the tents during Oktoberfest.

Answer: False
It may come as a surprise, but despite all the flowing beer, Oktoberfest is a family-friendly festival with carnival rides, carousels, roller coasters, musical showcases and traditional parades fit for all ages. Every Tuesday is Family Day, and special discounts are given on rides between noon and 6 p.m. Things can get rowdy after night falls, though, and all children under the age of six must exit beer tents by 8 p.m.

10. Which city is home to the country's largest Oktoberfest celebration in the U.S.?

  • (A) Los Angeles
  • (B) New Orleans
  • (C) Miami
  • (D) Cincinnati

Answer: D
The largest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States takes place every year in Cincinnati?or, Zinzinnati, as it's called. Unlike its German counterpart, the Ohio festival is much shorter, lasting only three days (Friday thru Sunday), but the party takes up six blocks along Fifth Street, stretching all the way from Downtown Cincinnati's Race Street to Broadway. The festival is free and open to the public and is a blend of the original German Oktoberfest and American cultural influences. The festival kicks off with a parade and a traditional barrel tapping ceremony similar to Munich's. The sixth annual ?Running of the Wieners,? a dog race featuring tiny dachshunds dressed in hot dog costumes, will take place in 2012. There's also a Beer Stein race, where contestants carry a tray of, yes, steins full of beer, and points are awarded for the amount left in the steins at the end of the run.

11. Why did the first Oktoberfest take place?

  • (A) It was originally a horse race in honor of a royal wedding.
  • (B) To commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall.
  • (C) In honor of the first giant pretzel being created.
  • (D) A national excuse for men to don lederhosen.

Answer: A
The first Oktoberfest was held on Oct. 12, 1810, and was originally in honor of the wedding between Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig?the future King Ludwig I?and Princess Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The wedding celebration lasted for five days, ending with the horse race on Oct. 17, and included many of the traditions and parades you still see at the festival today. At this point in history, Bavaria was still in its early stages of being an official kingdom, so the celebration helped the people establish their cultural identity as well as provide entertainment for the masses. While the horse race portion of the festival ended after 1838, and beer wasn't really a big part of it until 1887, the public appreciation and celebration of Bavarian history and tradition still lives on in today's Oktoberfest.

12. Where a woman wears a bow on her dirndl dress is important. What does it mean?

  • (A) If it's on the left side, she's available.
  • (B) If it's on the right side, she's taken.
  • (C) If it's in the front, she's a virgin.
  • (D) All of the above

Answer: D
Pay attention to the ladies' Dirndl dresses during Oktoberfest, as a little bow can tell you a lot about the person wearing it. If the bow is on the left side, it's understood she is single and willing to mingle. However, if her bow is on the right side, her affections are already given to someone else. Traditionally, a virginal woman will place the bow in front of her Dirndl dress. If you're looking to meet a man, it's a little trickier, since sadly, the same rules don't apply to lederhosen.

13. What is the most lost item at Oktoberfest in Germany?

  • (A) Clothing
  • (B) Wallets
  • (C) Live rabbits
  • (D) Children

Answer: A
Considering the amount of drinking that goes on during Oktoberfest, it's not surprising that certain things would get lost?chief among them, clothing. Last year's festival resulted in 1,300 items of clothing and more than 1,000 identity cards being lost, along with 425 lost keys, 390 lost mobile phones, and 370 lost pairs of eyeglasses. Ninety cameras and 80 jewelry items were also turned in to the Lost and Found, along with a set of dentures, Viking helmets, crutches, wedding rings, and even passports. Luckily, the Lost and Found office, or Fundb?ro, is open from 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. every night during Oktoberfest. But don't wait too long to visit?items are typically held for up to six months, at which point they're auctioned off to the public.

14. What instrument is often associated with German Oompah bands?

  • (A) Alphorn
  • (B) Clarinet
  • (C) Flute
  • (D) Oboe

Answer: A
Originally used as a way for Alpine farmers in Switzerland to communicate with people in surrounding villages?and as a way to calm nervous cows when it was time to be milked?the long, skinny alphorn is now used as a musical instrument, and is often associated with German Oompah bands. This video demonstrates the unique look and sound of the alphorn, played by members of the Oompah band at the Biergarten Restaurant in Epcot's Germany section at Walt Disney World.

15. How much beer is regularly consumed during Oktoberfest?

  • (A) Almost enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool
  • (B) Enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools
  • (C) Enough to fill five Olympic swimming pools
  • (D) Enough to fill 10 Olympic swimming pools

Answer: B
The amount of beer consumed by Oktoberfest patrons is an astounding 7.5 million liters, or close to 1.98 million gallons?that's enough to fill three Olympic swimming pools! While that may seem like a really high number, keep in mind that Oktoberfest brought in 6.9 million attendees in 2011.

Dot Earth Blog: The Domino Effect in Nature, and Visual Storytelling

My friend Randy Olson, the filmmaker and science-communication evangelizer devoted to prodding folks out of the ?nerd loop,? has been at it again ? this time running one of his three-day video-making boot camps for graduate students in the TerreWEB program (on communication of global-change science) at the University of British Columbia. One student, Megan Callahan, came up with a particularly effective video on the interconnections in ecosystems. Randy sees this film, describing the domino-like relationship of species in an ecosystem, as the best single video to emerge in his years-long coaching effort. I?d like to get your view, and I?m sure he would, too. Here?s his ?Your Dot? post, along with a link to more on his blog, The Benshi:

Randy Olson on Simplicity and Broad Communication: ?Of Dominoes and Blue Men

Effective broad public communication is a bit like mathematical proofs ? it?s about doing things in the simplest way with the fewest steps. ?Some people have a knack for it. ?Most don?t.

In the last eight years, I?ve run 11 three-day intensive video making workshops with science graduate students and undergraduates (six times at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, once each at the University of California, Merced, the University of Southern California, the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, the University of Troms? in Norway and the University of British Columbia last week).

The workshop usually consists of 25 students, each of whom presents a three-minute ?pitch? for a one-minute video on the first morning. They vote, the five most popular are selected, everyone else is randomly assigned as crew members, then they get a little more than two days to make the videos with no budget, just their own ingenuity and me squashing their grandiose visions down into something realistic given the constraints.

While the resulting videos haven?t been Oscar contenders, there?s never been a crew that ended up with something that everyone felt was a failure. That?s the power of teamwork, combined with the importance of the selection process (the students instinctively know which pitches are cool and likely to work). ?Most of the videos aren?t great (what can you expect given the constraints, especially considering that almost none of the students have ever even shot a camcorder or used Final Cut Pro editing software). But they all definitely work and are a huge amount of fun to view as a group at the end of the three days of hustling.

Yet every once in a while a student comes along with that knack, and manages to solve the communication challenge elegantly. ?Last week with the University of British Columbia?s TerreWeb program we had the best group ever. The student teams produced five excellent videos, and one was, to my mind, the best video ever (for my detailed account of the workshop click here). ?It?s nothing too flashy, and again, you have to keep in mind they had no budget, no training, little time. ?But this group had a director ? graduate student Megan Callahan ? with a clear, simple vision built around a concept that resonates ? the ?domino theory? ? which is often mentioned when people talk about the interconnectedness of species.

Have a look at this video, and realize it is also the product of ?natural selection? ? meaning that to date we?ve had roughly 250 student pitches that have resulted in 65 videos. ?Out of that pool of variation, which is getting to be a significant sample size, comes this one video that manages to land on a simple concept that plays to the strengths of the film medium ? namely that it is visual. ?Notice how little narration there is, and that you could turn off the volume and still pretty much absorb what it?s about.

Previously the best video ever came from a complete knucklehead undergraduate party boy who had zero intellectual interest in the nature or the exercise ? he just had the filmmaking instincts to come up with a simple, punchy concept (before he abandoned his crew to go to a music festival). ?It?s a relief to see that good concepts can also arise from good students.

And on a final note of simplicity, here?s a very simple, elegant, perfectly executed short video built around a single funny, highly likeable actor dressed up as a blue man for water conservation who gives a pitch-perfect performance:

It?s a piece that has both emotion (or at least faux emotion) and humor ? the key elements of broad communication. ?It?s proof that ?environmental filmmaking? doesn?t have to be the clumsy, preachy, dullness that it generally is.

You can learn more about this British Columbia workshop and Randy?s film-making philosophy in his latest post on The Benshi.

Burying the hatchet in the laser lab

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Experts have been heavily discussing why exactly electrically insulating materials insulate as they do. Based on different mechanisms, a classification scheme for insulators has been in use since the 1960s -- a theoretical one. However, it has been yet impossible to distinctly classify all insulators due to a lack of suitable experimental approaches. A team of physicists from Kiel University (Germany) and the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA) has now developed a new method to distinguish different insulators unambiguously.

The study was published in the online journal Nature Communications.

No notebook, no cell phone, no digital camera would be functional without electrical insulators. The hunt for precise knowledge about state-of-the-art or future insulators is just as rapid as the development of new, better electronic devices. For this reason, insulator research is currently one of the hottest topics in solid-state science.

Following the common scientific procedures in physics, such insulators are first described using universal equations and simulated by computer models. The theoretical results about materials then need to be verified by experiments in the lab. It is this experimental verification that failed for a number of insulators in the past. ?For many years, expert discussions went round and round without any final answer about the insulator class," says project leader Kai Rossnagel from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of Kiel University. The study presented now provides a completely new experimental approach to classifying the insulating behavior of materials objectively.

The science team made use of a special effect: some electrical conductors turn into insulators when strongly cooled down. At the same time, their electric state changes, and when the materials warm up again, their electronic properties also change. The scientists now use the speed of this change to distinguish different classes of insulators.

Inconceivably small time scales are applied in this method: For the classification, they use a laser beam camera to produce a film from individual images taken within femtoseconds. For comparison: If you took one picture every femtosecond for a period of one second, you would end up with 1.000.000.000.000.000 single pictures, while a regular film camera takes only 24 images per second. ?The electronic changes visible in the film, take about one to 50 femtoseconds for some materials and 100 to 200 femtoseconds for others," Rossnagel explains. In this manner, the scientists can distinguish one insulator class from another.

One of the heavily discussed insulator materials, titanium diselenide (TiSe2), was now precisely classified. On top of the precise classification of TiSe2, the scientists gave the first experimental evidence for a new class of insulators, the so-called excitonic insulators. ?We believe that our results may terminate the discussion about titanium diselenide after decades"; says Rossnagel but admits: ?Only after several years of cross-checking our results, we will know for sure if our method is as useful as we think now."

The new classification method uses a camera technique presented by the same team of researchers in the journal Nature in March 2011. It is called ?femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with extreme UV radiation." The current study was the first systematic application of the new camera technique to a scientific question. The study was carried out within the Kiel Nano and Surface Science, one out of four major research themes at Kiel University. It was funded on the German side by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

(AP) ? Britain's Royal Collection Trust has gone Pop Art with the purchase of four famous Andy Warhol portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

The colorful screenprints are based on a formal photograph of the queen wearing a tiara and necklace that was used during her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977.

They will form part of the Portraits of a Monarch exhibit starting in November at Windsor Castle. The purchase was announced Monday, but royal officials refused to say how much was paid for the portraits.

The purchase brings the distinctive style of the American artist to a collection of portraits of British rulers that dates back to the 15th Century.

"They are in a very interesting and contemporary technique that Andy Warhol really popularized, screen printing with wonderfully vibrant colors, in multiples," said Royal Librarian Jane Roberts. "They join a collection dating back 4, 5, 600 years. The fact that they are in a completely new technique is not surprising; things change."

Roberts said the queen had approved the purchase.

"The Warhol prints of the queen are in many ways the most important popular image of the queen to be created by an artist print maker over the last few decades," she said.

Warhol, who died in 1987, was one of the most commercially successful artists of the 20th Century and used similar techniques in portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, and Elvis Presley. He created these images of the queen in 1985 as part of a portfolio of screenprints called "Reigning Queens."

The exhibit will be open to people who visit Windsor Castle, which is roughly 20 miles west of London. It will run until June 2013.
