Study links heavy diesel exhaust to lung cancer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? There's new evidence that exposure to exhaust from diesel engines increases the risk of lung cancer.

Diesel exhaust has long been classified as a probable carcinogen. But the 20-year study from the National Cancer Institute took a closer look by tracking more than 12,000 workers in certain kinds of mines ? facilities that mined for potash, lime and other nonmetals. They breathed varying levels of exhaust from diesel-powered equipment, levels higher than the general population encounters.

The most heavily exposed miners had three times the risk of death from lung cancer compared to workers with the lowest exposures, said the study released Friday by the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

But even workers with lower exposures had a 50 percent increased risk, wrote lead author Debra Silverman, an NCI epidemiologist.

"Our findings are important not only for miners but also for the 1.4 million American workers and the 3 million European workers exposed to diesel exhaust, and for urban populations worldwide," Silverman wrote.

She pointed to some highly polluted cities in China, Mexico and Portugal that in past years have reported diesel exposure levels that over long periods could be comparable to those experienced by miners with lower exposures.

Litigation from some mining companies had delayed release of the study findings.

A separate industry group not involved in that litigation said Friday that the study looked back at mines using decades-old equipment, and there's far less pollution from diesel engines today.

"Diesel engine and equipment makers, fuel refiners and emissions control technology manufacturers have invested billions of dollars in research to develop and deploy technologies and strategies that reduce engine emissions, now ultimately to near zero levels to meet increasingly stringent clean air standards here in the United States and around the world," said Allen Schaeffer of the nonprofit Diesel Technology Forum.

Cespedes, A's complete $36M, 4-year deal

PHOENIX (AP) - The Oakland Athletics and Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes have finalized their $36 million, four-year deal.

The A's made the announcement Saturday.

The 26-year-old Cespedes will be placed on the 40-man roster after the A's moved third baseman Scott Sizemore to the 60-day disabled list with a tear in his left knee that will sideline him for the season.

Cespedes played in Cuba's top league for eight seasons before defecting in 2011. He starred for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, hitting .458 with two home runs and five RBIs in six games.

Sculptors can use almost any material to carve on that can be cut through. The processes used in sculpting depend on the media being used. When working with wood, the process of subtraction is used, where parts of the material are ?subtracted? or carved away. Subtraction is a way to carve stone and marble.

It is important to properly manipulate clay and ceramics in order to produced the desired finish product. Successful clay modeling can be achieved through the process of manipulation when sculpting.

Adding pieces to complete a sculpture is known as addition. Metal sculptures use a variety of pieces to compose a significant piece of art. Sand is continuously added to sand sculptures to complete a piece of art.

Substitution is also used in sculpting, where one material is substituted by another, often used in environmental sculpture and sculptures made from recycled material.

Color and Black and white photography is a popular concept. The contrast in colors presents a different type of photo that can be more appealing and unique. Through analog and digital media artists are able to include unique effects; film photography enhances a photo while preserving natural values. The material that the photograph is printed on can also change the finished result.

Diverse types of media have a direct effect on the way the final project may look. Aspiring artists should experiment with different types of media and concepts to find what is liked. Visual graphic arts has many methods to approaching a media with diverse design concepts. Art is an inspirational field that can show personality and elegance in every piece of work.

Lifestyle choices made in your 20s can impact your heart health in your 40s

ScienceDaily (Mar. 2, 2012) ? Maintaining a healthy lifestyle from young adulthood into your 40s is strongly associated with low cardiovascular disease risk in middle age, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study.

"The problem is few adults can maintain ideal cardiovascular health factors as they age," said Kiang Liu, first author of the study. "Many middle-aged adults develop unhealthy diets, gain weight and aren't as physically active. Such lifestyles, of course, lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes and elevated cardiovascular risk."

Liu is a professor and the associate chair for research in the department of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

"In this study, even people with a family history of heart problems were able to have a low cardiovascular disease risk profile if they started living a healthy lifestyle when they were young," Liu said. "This supports the notion that lifestyle may play a more prominent role than genetics."

Published Feb. 28 in the journal Circulation, this is the first study to show the association of a healthy lifestyle maintained throughout young adulthood and middle age with low cardiovascular disease risk in middle age.

The majority of people who maintained five healthy lifestyle factors from young adulthood (including a lean body mass index (BMI), no excess alcohol intake, no smoking, a healthy diet and regular physical activity) were able to remain in this low-risk category in their middle-aged years.

In the first year of the study, when the participants' average age was 24 years old, nearly 44 percent had a low cardiovascular disease risk profile. Twenty years later, overall, only 24.5 percent fell into the category of a low cardiovascular disease risk profile.

Sixty percent of those who maintained all five healthy lifestyles reached middle age with the low cardiovascular risk profile, compared with fewer than 5 percent who followed none of the healthy lifestyles.

Researchers used data collected over 20 years from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in (Young) Adults (CARDIA) study. It began in 1985 and 1986 with several thousand 18 to 30 year-olds and has since followed the same group of participants.

For this study, the researchers analyzed data such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, BMI, alcohol intake, tobacco use, diet and exercise from more than 3,000 of the CARDIA participants to define a low cardiovascular disease risk profile and healthy lifestyle factors.

If the next generation of young people adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles, they will gain more than heart health, Liu stressed.

"Many studies suggest that people who have low cardiovascular risk in middle age will have a better quality of life, will live longer and will have lower Medicare costs in their older age," he said. "There are a lot of benefits to maintaining a low-risk profile."

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institutes of Health funded this research.
