Outer Banks hotel sued for Christmas Eve firing ? Business ...

The Comfort Inn Oceanfront South in Nags Head has been charged with religious discrimination after it fired a woman who says her religion forbade her from working on Christmas Eve 2010.

Claudia Neal, a practicing Seventh-day Adventist, worked as a desk clerk at the hotel. In the past, managers had accommodated her need to be off work from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday.

Hotel management, however, juggled work assignments for Dec. 24, 2010, and scheduled Neal to work into the evening that day even though it was a Friday. She again explained her faith?s requirements and reiterated that managers had always accommodated her before. According to her complaint, that?s when she was fired.

She filed a complaint with the EEOC alleging the hotel failed to accommodate her religious beliefs. The commission attempted to resolve the dispute through its conciliation process, but the two sides never agreed. The EEOC has now filed suit against the hotel, alleging it violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act when it fired Neal.

Note: Employers that discontinue accommodations (either religious or disability-based) will find an uphill battle in court. To win, they must demonstrate that the accommodation caused them an undue hardship?a difficult argument to make when they?ve already been accommodating the employee for some time.

The power project extends the Kremlin's footprint in the volatile fringes of the?former Soviet Union, following?Russia's agreement to write off nearly $500 million in Kyrgyz debts.

Russian state-controlled hydroelectric power producer?RusHydro?will build the four plants by 2016. The deal was agreed in September after?Kyrgyzstan?extended a lease on a Russian military base and confirmed plans to close a U.S. military base used to fly troops in and out of?Afghanistan.

"Today we witness a historic event in the upper reaches of the Naryn River -- for the first time since the fall of the great?Soviet Union, we lay the foundation not of just a single hydropower plant, but of an entire cascade of stations," Kyrgyz President?Almazbek Atambayev?said at a ground-breaking ceremony.

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ? Prosecutors say a Colorado teenager has confessed in the abduction and killing of a 10-year-old girl and in a separate attack on a runner.

Authorities also said Thursday they have "overwhelming" DNA evidence against 17-year-old Austin Reed Sigg.

Sigg lived about a mile from Jessica Ridgeway, who disappeared Oct. 5.

Sigg made his first court appearance Thursday, keeping his head bowed for much of the time, talking with his attorney but otherwise saying little.

He made eye contact at one point with relatives of Ridgeway, who were in the courtroom wearing purple ribbons in the girl's memory.

Why employee engagement is good for business | Dynamic ...

Here is a startling figure for you: The cost to the Australian Economy of employees who are not ?engaged? by their work or employer is estimated to be $42.1 billion a year. To put that into perspective, that is the equivalent of 20.8 times the most recent Trade Deficit of Australia (August 2012).?

This is pretty staggering isn?t it? What it goes to show is that staff are the linchpin to most, if not all, businesses. If they are unhappy and doing a bad job, they could be potentially affecting your business profits. After all, your staff design your products, sell them, interact with your clients and above all, represent your brand. On the other hand, if they do a good job, your business thrives.

It is no surprise then, that some of the most successful businesses work to look after their employees. Just look at the 2012 ?Best places to work? and you will see successful brands such as Google, Salesforce, Diageo and RedBalloon all listed. Indeed,if you go back through previous years, businesses which consistently rank as good employers, seem to be businesses which continue to do well in business.? So what is their secret

Common elements of great places to work

Whether you read research papers, or just listen to the experiences of employees who are really happy with their jobs (white or blue collar), the answers are pretty much consistent and the same. Employee engagement is the key to creating a workplace that employees perform well in. Research has found that employees were most engaged and happy when:

  • ?I always know what I need to do when I show up.?
  • ?My manager lets me handle some situations my way, but the ultimate outcomes I am to achieve are clear between me and her?
  • ?Working in a company where my talents, knowledge and skill are understood, put to good use and respected.?

The research found that open two-way communication was pivotal to high levels of employee engagement. Furthermore, a good place to work is one where employees feel involved, that they have freedoms, clear directions and where the culture encourages them to bond with their workmates.

When these elements exist in a business, evidence suggests that employees are more cooperative, more helpful with colleagues, more punctual, more likely to turn up to work (not take sick days) and stay with the company longer. Contrast this with disengaged employees who are more likely to sabotage the business; look for ways to do less work, not turn up to work, or actively stymie business profits.

How to engage your employees

Chances are, you already know who your best employees are. Step back from the business and work out what makes them such valuable assets in your team. Is it the fact that they are a manager and have more visibility over the day-to-day? Or do you communicate with them more because you naturally get on and thus they feel like an important part of the team? Whatever it is, try to isolate common elements and then work out what you can do to infuse that into your workplace for all.

As identified above, communication is important in successful and happy businesses, so take steps to engage your workforce. This can be done through methods such as daily catch ups which allow you and your staff to know what is expected of them, the use of online project boards if they work in different locations, conducting annual away days to develop business strategy, or implementing systems which encourage you and your staff to interact in more meaningful ways.

What you need to remember is that with some adjustment, each of these approaches can work for businesses with multiple site locations, for businesses with either full time staff or shift workers and part time staff and in small or large businesses.

Technology can help

Fortunately, due to advances in technology, our methods of communication, and of organising our lives are made easier. For example if you are looking for a tool which can help streamline communications and marketing efforts to your clients, then there are tools like Salesforce or Marketo. Or if you need a way to hire casual staff simply and cheaply and without fuss, then you may use Oneshift. And if you are looking for a way to create shift rosters,? collate time sheet information to export to payroll, communicate with staff what you expect of them each shift, or need to share information with everyone at once, then you may sign up with Deputy, a solution designed to streamline business operations and engage everyone within the company.

Whatever you need, chances are solutions exist to help you. And if you are not sure where to find them, ask your staff, they perhaps, may have a solution you are looking for.

President Calls Romney a 'Bullsh**ter'

President Obama referred to his challenger Mitt Romney as a "bullsh**ter" in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the latest salvo in a campaign that has seen its share of insults hurled from both sides.

Passed on a message from the young daughter of an editor of the magazine, the president remarked that he "does very in that demographic. Ages six to 12? I'm a killer ? You know, kids have good instincts. They look at the other guy and say, 'Well, that's a bullsh**ter, I can tell.'"

Romney campaign spokesman Kevin Madden responded, saying, "President Obama is rattled and on the defensive. He's running on empty and has nothing left but attacks and insults. It's unfortunate he has to close the final days of the campaign this way."

In truth, both campaigns and their allies have hurled insults and insinuations at one another, with charges ranging from the commission of possible felonies to possibly having a hand in a woman's death to the unconstitutional assumption of the presidency by a noncitizen. A week ago, Romney's son Tagg told a radio interviewer that he felt like running down to the stage and taking a swing at the president during the second presidential debate, a comment he apologized for at the end of the third debate.

When asked about the president's "bulls***er" comment, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said he hadn't yet read the article but argued, "What is true is that trust is very important in this election. The president is someone who says what he means and does what he says." He suggested reporters shouldn't be "distracted by the word" bullsh**ter but should be focused on the larger issue of Romney's trustworthiness.

Pfeiffer cited the myriad shifts in positions Romney has made, including whether or not he would seek a tax cut for the top 1 percent, which he once proclaimed he would do but now says would be offset by the elimination of tax deductions and loopholes for the wealthy.

Questioning Romney's honesty and trustworthiness is indeed is one of the president's main messages on the campaign trail, with the Obama campaign convinced that the president's advantage in whom voters perceive as trustworthy will help sway undecided voters. Knowing of the ambivalence many voters feel about the job the president has done, part of the president's strategy has been to paint Romney as an unacceptable alternative.

In Tampa, Fla., this morning, the president charged that Romney "knows his plan isn't any different than the policies that got us into the mess. So in the final weeks of this election, he's counting on you forgetting that his policies aren't going to work. He's hoping that you won't remember and you'll come down with a case of what we call Romnesia."

After saying that Romney's plan "is likely to create jobs in China, not America," and that "he wants to give millionaires and billionaires a $250,000 tax cut," which will either increase the deficit or force tax increases on middle-class families - charges the Romney camp denies - the president asserted that Romney is "hoping you're going to come down with a severe case of Romnesia just before you cast your ballot."

And lest anyone think Romnesia was merely a fun play on words, the president said, "now, Tampa, we joke about Romnesia, but all of this speaks to something that's really important in this election and that is the issue of trust. When you elect a president, you're counting on somebody you can trust to fight for you, who you can trust to do what they say they're going to do, who can trust - that you can trust to make sure that when something unexpected happens, he or she is going to be thinking about your families, your future. Trust matters."

The pitch comes at the same time the president laments the onslaught of negative TV ads that flooding the airwaves in battleground states. "You've now seen three debates, months of campaign events, and way too many TV commercials," Obama said at a rally today in Richmond, Va.

But lamentations aside, new data from an independent report show that Obama and his allies are responsible for the majority of ads - and the most negative ads - in the final stretch of the campaign. While Republican groups and presidential nominee Mitt Romney have spent $10 million more than Obama on ads this month, it's the president who has actually put more spots on the air - 15,000 more than his rival, according to the Wesleyan Media Project, which tracks media buys.

Wesleyan found that President Obama's campaign has been much more negative, despite his rhetoric on the campaign trail decrying the nasty attacks. The study found nearly three-quarters of pro-Obama ads in October - 73.3 percent - were negative attacks on Romney. Twenty percent emphasized contrasts between the candidates, while 6 percent were positive, the study found. By contrast, Romney and his allies have been modestly more positive, with nearly 12 percent of ads refraining from contrasts or attacks. Thirty-six percent of pro-Romney ads this month have been negative attacks

How To Deploy Your Candidate

154744355 Mitt Romney greets supporters in Cincinnati on Thursday. Ohioans should expect frequent visits by both candidates in the campaign's closing days.

As the presidential election heads into its final days, the most important decision strategists in both campaigns are making is where to send the candidate. There is no more precious resource: Every visit initiates a multilevel strategy to capture votes, voter information, and volunteers who can be squeezed for one more hour of effort.

In this final stretch, the size of crowds at rallies can reach into the tens of thousands. The candidate?s pitch is more urgent: What voters choose to do with their ballots will change the course of the nation. But beneath that vast sweeping feeling of history is an intense and focused game of gathering and sifting. To most of us, the attendees at a rally look like an undifferentiated blanket of people, but to those working the political ground game, it is a pixelated assortment of uncollected cellphone numbers, hands to work the phone banks, and sturdy legs to walk neighborhoods. In states with early voting, the people a candidate draws to a rally are fresh meat to be cajoled onto a bus and taken to a polling place. ?How about we get in our car, vote early, and bank our votes,? said Sen. Rob Portman Thursday morning in Cincinnati, ?so that on Election Day we can make sure other people get out and vote.?

In this process, the candidate is the flypaper. Before Barack Obama or Mitt Romney visit a town, their campaigns email supporters and targeted undecided voters. At a minimum, their teams will obtain a piece of private information, perhaps a cellphone number, that can be used to encourage someone to vote. Even better is if they can score a commitment from someone to vote early. ?Best of all is if they can obtain a promise from that voter to volunteer for the campaign, thereby adding another foot soldier to the cause.

The ticket to see the candidate is the bait. Voters can get them at the local campaign office. Once inside, a volunteer takes down as much information as possible and tries to secure those commitments for future volunteering. Campaigns are consumed with the idea that individual voters are motivated by community contact. Neighbor-to-neighbor appeals work the best. A campaign outpost in the neighborhood is effective because a voter is handed a ticket by someone who looks like them or shares their experiences. That is why the number of offices in a state can matter. (In Ohio, the Obama team has more than 120; Romney has about 40.) They expand a campaign?s ability to make neighborhood connections.

Every ticket has a code. When you show up and get your ticket scanned, the campaign knows it. Staffers with iPads will stop you to ask for more information like that all important cellphone number. (In the campaign vernacular, the voter is being ?caged? for information.) If they don?t convince you to get on the bus or drive to the early voting location after the rally, the campaign will contact you in the next several days. You?re likely to get a phone call from someone who attended the rally and voted, asking you to do the same. When you are trying to gather every possible vote, it is more effective to begin the conversation with I see that we were both at the rally together than with the generic I?m calling in support of candidate X.

But most rallies now are filled with the faithful who are already likely to vote. They represent a different opportunity. They can be used to make voter phone calls and contacts that are crucial in motivating all kinds of voters, though the biggest prize these days are ?low propensity voters.? These are people who have intersected with politics at some point and in some way?signing up on that web site or giving that small donation is ?how they got on one of the party lists?but who aren?t regular participants. These are the voters who take the most work to get to the polls, either because they are lazy, only mildly interested, or because they have complex allegiances. Maybe this resident of Canton voted for Ohio Gov. John Kasich but against his collective bargaining legislation. Both parties want that guy. Republicans know he?s open to their team; Democrats know that he cares about unions.

The Obama and Romney campaigns understand that if they are simply using the early voting period as a time to bank the votes of people who would otherwise have waited in line on Election Day then they are doing it wrong. The team that wins will be the one that grows the size of their vote. For Democrats, this is even more crucial. Polls show the president is doing better with registered voters than with likely voters. Obama needs to erase the distinction, or at least shrink it.?

Police hope to interview New York nanny in children stabbing

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York police on Friday are hoping to interview the critically wounded nanny suspected of stabbing to death two children of a CNBC television executive in the family's luxury Manhattan apartment, a police official said.

The New York Police Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the nanny, identified as Yoselyn Ortega, remains sedated in critical condition at a Manhattan hospital. Ortega, 50, who police say cut her own throat, has not been charged because police have not been able to interview her.

The official said Ortega remains the prime suspect in the stabbing death of two children, Leo, 2, and Lulu, 6.

Police hoped to interview the nanny later on Friday, the official said.

The children's mother, Marina Krim, discovered the bodies of the little boy and girl at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday in their apartment less than a block from Central Park on Manhattan's affluent Upper West Side, police said.

A CNBC spokesman released a statement Friday expressing the "sadness we all feel" for CNBC executive Kevin Krim and his wife. The couple's "unimaginable loss ... is without measure."

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the children suffered "multiple stab wounds," and were pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

"It's about the worst thing you can hear or imagine," Browne said at a news briefing Thursday night.

The nanny was found lying on the bathroom floor and had stabbed herself in the neck, police said. A bloody kitchen knife lay on the floor nearby, police said.

The mother had returned home with a third child, 3-year-old Nessie, after the girl's swimming lesson, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said at a media briefing.

She saw that the apartment was dark and returned to the lobby to ask the doorman if the nanny and kids had gone out, he said. The doorman said no, and she returned to the apartment and made the grisly discovery, he said.

A neighbor heard the mother's screams and called 911, police said.

Kevin Krim, the children's father, had been en route home from a business trip at the time, and was met by police at the airport and notified of the tragedy, police said.

Krim is a senior vice president and general manager of CNBC Digital. He moved to CNBC in March from Bloomberg LLP, where he was global head of Bloomberg Digital. A graduate of Harvard University, Krim was also a former executive at Yahoo.

Neighbors said the children's mother was a pediatrician.

The final entry in an online blog that Marina Krim maintained to document her daily life with her children was dated Thursday, hours before the discovery.

"Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible," she wrote. "And he does things like, "(I) want a fresh bagel" and "Dito (what he calls himself) wants cold milk" and most adorable of all, "No thank you" - he never uses "No" alone, it's always paired with "thank you."

A source at NBC News confirmed that the blog - which contains pictures of the Krim family - as Krim's.

New ?8m business motors into Watford | Connect PR

Watford relocation - CGI

Despite the ongoing economic challenges, a Watford business has announced plans to launch a brand new dealership in the town.

Full planning permission has been granted for a new ?8m state-of-the-art Volkswagen showroom and workshop at Otterspool Way in Watford.

Work is now well underway at the new dealership ? a joint venture with Citygate and Volkswagen UK ? which will ultimately include a 17-car showroom, customer business lounge, 21 workshop bays, two MOT bays, high tech smart repair bay and a 65 used car display.

Jonathan Smith, managing director for the Citygate Group, said: ?We have traded very successfully in Watford for six years, selling over 700 new and used cars last year. Our year-on-year growth means the current site is no longer suitable and we cannot deliver the customer experience that is core to our mission and values.

?Citygate and Volkswagen UK have been looking to relocate for the past few years and once we identified this prime site, we knew we had to seize the opportunity.

?I?m certain there will not be another car retailer nearby where customers will be able to see so many vehicles in such convenient and comfortable surroundings. Add to that our high levels of aftersales experience and customer care and we are certain to see our growth continue unabated.

?Moving to larger premises has also called for the need for more staff and we are currently recruiting for around 20 new positions, which we see as a real coup during such tough economic times.

?The relocation signifies a huge investment for the business and confirms our commitment to Watford drivers, the brand and the local economy.?

To apply for a position at Citygate Volkswagen in Watford or for details on the new dealership, please call Citygate Automotive on 01923 556112 or visit www.citygate.co.uk or http://www.citygate.co.uk/news/news-21

Their method could serve as model for other mode-of-action studies

An interdisciplinary team of researchers has dissected a case of synergy in drug-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia to understand the mechanism by which two drugs, danusertib and bosutinib, work together to overcome resistance in the BCR-ABL gatekeeper mutation-specific disease. The team includes a researcher at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Austria and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The goal is to address an unmet medical need because this BCR-ABL mutation confers resistance to all currently approved kinase inhibitors for chronic myeloid leukemia.

The study appeared in the Sept. 30 online version of Nature Chemical Biology.

"Treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia rapidly improved after the introduction of the first BCR-ABL inhibitor, Gleevec (imatinib)," said study co-author Uwe Rix, Ph.D., an assistant member of the Moffitt's Drug Discovery Department and Experimental Therapeutics Program. "However, it soon became apparent that a broad spectrum of possible resistance mechanisms necessitated second- and third-generation BCR-ABL inhibitors. Although these are mostly very successful, none of the currently approved options has been effective in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia who harbor the BCR-ABL gatekeeper mutation."

The researchers investigated the molecular mechanisms and logic underlying the synergistic interaction between danusertib and bosutinib, which is specific for BCR-ABL gatekeeper mutation-transformed cells. They applied a novel systems pharmacology approach involving a combination of different proteomics and gene expression profiling methods.

"We found previously unappreciated features of both agents," Rix said. "The synergy did not correlate with direct inhibition of BCR-ABL. Instead, our observations converged on the downstream MAPK signaling cascade as the predominantly affected pathway in the synergistic inhibition of BCR-ABL."

The researchers said the combination of both compounds impaired the activity of c-MYC, a gene regulator that codes a transcription factor playing a well-established but a not well understood role in a broad spectrum of human cancers.

"In the context of chronic myeloid leukemia, c-MYC is required for BCR-ABL-mediated transformation," Rix explained. "What is intriguing is that chronic myeloid leukemia cells with the BCR-ABL gatekeeper mutation seem to be more dependent on the MAPK/c-MYC signaling axis than BCR-ABL wild-type cells. Thus, challenging c-MYC with drugs appears promising in these resistant cells, but steps have only recently been made."

The researchers concluded that they have unraveled the action and impact of a "new synergistic drug interaction between danusertib and bosutinib in a clinically relevant, highly drug-resistant disease setting" by revealing a "non-obvious synergistic mechanism elicited by several off targets of the two small molecules."

"We believe this strategy of gaining a functional understanding of drug synergy may serve as a model for further mode-of-action studies," they concluded.

Skype 6.0 lands with Microsoft and Facebook account integration, Retina support

You're probably saying to yourself, "didn't Skype just get a Windows 8-friendly refresh?" Why yes, yes it did. But Skype 6.0 here isn't limited to Windows RT slates, instead it's designed for more traditional Windows systems and even has a similarly numbered OS X counter part. There's a number of notable changes here, including the ability to sign in directly with your Facebook or Microsoft account. (If you've got a Live Messenger, Hotmail or Outlook.com account, then you've got a Microsoft account.) The most visible changes, however, will be the "flattened" Don't-call-it-Metro-friendly UI on Windows and the addition of Retina display support on OS X. There's a few other minor changes, including some additional localizations, which you can read about at the source. And heck, since you're already there, might as well download Skype too.

Emily_Koch published Post's first Bristol mayor hustings being held tonight

THE Post is holding the first of a series of "tough" hustings tonight which will test the candidates' knowledge on local issues.

It will be held at the Vassall Centre in Gill Avenue, Fishponds, from 7pm-8pm.

Anyone can attend the debate but in order to give us an idea of numbers, we would prefer those doing so to let us know in advance.

If you would like to be in the audience, please ring 0117 934 3342, email r.hill@bepp.co.uk or visit http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/org/2805348936. Admission is free.

Three more Post hustings will be held during the next few weeks.

They will be held at:

- Anglican Chapel, Arnos Vale on Wednesday, October 31 from 1pm-2pm.

- Bristol Room, Memorial Stadium, Horfield, on Wednesday, November 7 from 7pm-8pm.

- Ashton Gate on Monday, November 12, from 7pm-8pm.

The hustings will be chaired by Post editor Mike Norton who wants to engage as many Bristolians as possible with the election. He said: "They'll be tough for the candidates, too. We won't be giving them the questions in advance so they will have to show a real depth of knowledge about the city."

Analysis: Calm Romney pins hopes on momentum

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is acting like a challenger who feels he has enough momentum and time to overtake the president by Election Day, two weeks from now.

Judging from Monday's final debate, President Barack Obama almost seems to agree.

Obama was clearly the more aggressive combatant in the 90-minute forum, whacking Romney's personal investment record, truthfulness and overseas fundraising. Romney, meantime, went out of his way to blunt his differences with the president on several key foreign policy matters ? supposedly the debate's focus ? and to appear calm, moderate and non-threatening.

Romney's approach was one typically taken by front-runners: First, do no harm. Don't stir the pot. Keep the clock running.

Obama's forcefulness appeared chiefly aimed at discouraged Democrats who might not bother voting, rather than at the sliver of undecided voters in the handful of states still in play. Romney is not the benign, acceptable alternative he claims to be, Obama seemed to be saying, and I, your president, am finally willing to fight tooth and nail for a second term after sleepwalking through the first debate, which triggered Romney's rise in the polls.

"It's all get-out-the-vote now," said Matt Bennett, a veteran of Democratic campaigns. "If you're undecided now, you ain't voting."

"Obama will win the debate on points," Bennett said, "but it won't matter much."

A number of other Democrats shared that view. Interest in the third and final debate probably suffered, they said, from voter fatigue, competition from televised football and baseball games, and the official topic ? foreign policy ? in a campaign dominated by jobs and the economy.

These Democrats, however, don't necessarily think Obama will lose. Some feel Romney took a big gamble by being so tame in the final face-to-face encounter.

Obama still holds a slight edge in Ohio in most independent polls. It's the state that can almost seal the president's re-election if he holds it, because it would force Romney to sweep virtually every other contested state, including tough Wisconsin.

Romney's stay-the-course demeanor Monday points to confidence that his slight rise in the polls will continue, even if only a smidgen of voters are truly undecided. Democrats note that many thousands of people are already voting through early balloting programs in key states.

The election's outcome may turn on whether Obama's get-out-the-vote ground troops can outrun Romney's momentum. Polls show Romney doing considerably better among likely voters, as opposed to registered voters. That gives Obama's volunteers a chance to hunt down thousands of "soft supporters," and persuade them to get to a polling place.

From the debate's opening minutes, Romney showed no appetite for verbal fisticuffs. Moderator Bob Schieffer invited the former Massachusetts governor to critique Obama's handling of the fatal attack on a U.S. Consulate in Libya, a topic Romney had fumbled in the second debate, six days ago.

Romney showed no interest. Instead, he congratulated the president on the killing of Osama bin Laden, hoping to negate an Obama strong point as quickly as possible.

Throughout the evening, Romney continued a recent trend of moderating his foreign policy positions. He seemed bent on presenting himself as a sound commander in chief, even if it required him to narrow his differences with the president.

Romney offered unusual praise for Obama's war efforts in Afghanistan, declaring the 2010 surge of 33,000 U.S. troops a success and asserting that efforts to train Afghan security forces are on track to enable the U.S. and its allies to put the Afghans fully in charge of security by the end of 2014.

Romney said U.S. forces should complete their withdrawal on that schedule. Previously he has criticized the setting of a specific withdrawal date.

And on Iran, Romney mollified his previous criticism of Obama's sanctions policy. He stressed that resorting to war to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon would be a last option, softening the hawkish tone that had been a hallmark of his campaign.

Longtime GOP strategist Terry Holt defended Romney's soft touch.

"His first goal is to appear presidential," Holt said. "This is not a grand jury where all he has to do is indict. People are looking to him for presidential qualities. Cool, calm and clear."

Obama, by contrast, looked for every chance to criticize Romney on as many topics as possible.

"Governor, when it comes to our foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s, just like the social policies of the 1950s and the economic policies of the 1920s," Obama said.

He chided Romney for having said Russia was America's greatest geopolitical foe. "The Cold War's been over for 20 years," Obama said.

"Presidents always have an advantage when debating foreign policy," said Republican consultant Matt Mackowiak. "Romney did well enough tonight to maintain his momentum and win this race."

Obama has 14 days to stop that momentum. He plunges in immediately Tuesday with events in Delray Beach, Fla., and Dayton, Ohio. On Wednesday and Thursday the president plans to campaign in Iowa, Colorado, California, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio.

Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, on Tuesday were headed to Nevada and Colorado. Romney planned to campaign Wednesday in Nevada and Iowa, and Thursday and Friday in Ohio.

Neither ticket can afford to write off the other competitive states. But Ohio seems destined to be the testing ground of whether Obama's tiny lead and big ground operation can hold off Romney's October momentum.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? New research carried out by scientists at Universities in Exeter, France and Switzerland reveals for the first time the importance of social networking in producing a successful family.

The study found that, regardless of how big and healthy individual chicks are, what really matters to their chances of surviving and breeding is how siblings in the nest interact with each other, with cooperative families faring best.

Differences in patterns of feeding between mothers and fathers were a key factor in determining the behaviour of their offspring, according to the study published online October 23 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Mothers selected weaker, hungrier nestlings while fathers did the opposite, choosing those who were the most competitive.

Dr Nick Royle, from the University of Exeter, was involved in the study, alongside scientists from Universities in Toulouse, Bern and Basel. He said: "Whilst it is well-established that large, strong offspring are generally expected to be more successful than small, less well-nourished offspring, it has not been previously shown that the success of both individuals and families as a whole depends on the structure of social interactions among offspring."

"As any parent knows, parental care can be hard work and there is often a squeeze on the availability of resources in families. This sets the scene for conflicts of interest among family members over how these resources are allocated. Our study shows that the most successful families are those that are best at resolving these conflicts; parents and offspring that are most effective at responding to each other are the most successful."

Scientists from the University of Exeter's Centre for Ecology & Conservation worked with colleagues from the Universities of Basel and Bern in Switzerland and the French Universit? Paul Sabatier alongside French scientific research organisation CNRS. It was funded by the Natural Environment Research Council and the Swiss National Science Foundation.

63 broods of begging great tits breeding in nest boxes in woods around Bern in Switzerland were filmed when the nestlings were 10 days old, when both parents feed the young using different methods of selecting which nestlings receive food. The researchers examined the network of social interaction between the siblings, and then monitored the parents and their offspring to see whether they survived and went on to breed the following year.

Great tit mothers prefer to feed hungrier, smaller nestlings whereas fathers choose stronger, larger nestlings to feed. So in families where mothers provide most of the food, the young are more 'gregarious'. They moved around more and interacted more strongly with one another as the hungrier nestlings tried to move closer to their mothers to be fed. In broods where fathers fed more than mothers, nestlings moved around much less because the more competitive offspring took up the best positions near him.

Small and medium-sized broods fared better when the mother was the main feeder, whilst larger broods were more successful when the father provided most of the feeds. This could be because of constraints on space in larger families, making it harder for chicks to move around and jostle for position and easier to respond to fathers, with their simpler feeding rules, not mothers.

Dr Nick Royle concluded: "Users of Twitter will know that the more interactions they have, the more successful their profile is likely to be, and it's similar for nesting great tits; at least at nests where mothers provide most of the feeds. When fathers do most of the work offspring are much less gregarious. For young great tits social networking is related to the amount of physical contact each nestling has with their siblings, not the amount of tweeting they do. But using our social networks measure enabled us to demonstrate a novel link between how family members interact with one another and the success of those families."

"Our approach is not just applicable to social interactions in birds, however, or just for families. It could also be applied to understanding what patterns of social organisation best determine success between competing groups of humans, such as in business or team sports."
