Amazon says more items are now shipped with Prime than free shipping, dishes a few other stats

Amazon isn't one to provide a lot of specific numbers on the products and services it offers, but it has confirmed today that its $79 a year Prime service recently crossed a fairly significant milestone. The company says that more items are now shipped with Prime's two-day shipping than with its standard Free Super Saver Shipping -- which is, presumably, quite a lot. Of course, Prime has grown to become considerably more than just a premium shipping option since it launched in 2005, and Amazon has also taken the opportunity to divulge a few other details on the service. On Prime Instant Video, it says that it now offers 22,000 titles for streaming, a growth of 70 percent this year -- it also notes, somewhat interestingly, that 96.4 percent of the Prime video catalog is viewed in any given week. As for the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, it now counts 180,000 titles, the most borrowed of which is The Hunger Games.

Real Estate Buying Tips That Anyone Can Follow | Marathon Fl ...

If real estate is a new thing for you, you need to learn a few things before considering buying anything. This article will demonstrate several straightforward tips for new real estate buyers.

If you are thinking about moving, you may want to research the neighborhoods of properties you are interested in online. Lots of information about neighborhoods can be found online. Even extremely tiny towns have information available online. Make sure that you can live comfortably in a town by researching the population, unemployment rate and salary ranges.

If you are purchasing a home, employ your own professional services. It?s tempting and easier to go with a house inspector and appraiser chosen by the seller. No one wants to pay money when they don?t have to. Nevertheless, you can benefit greatly from hiring your own professionals who are trustworthy and will be working for your best interests. If you are sure you get the truth from the beginning, you can save yourself a lot of money and stress later on.

Know what kinds of housing to expect in the neighborhood you are hoping to move to. You should be knowledgeable of this, because it is in your interest to avoid buying the best and most expensive house in the area. Though that might be tempting, it?s not usually possible to retain the value on a home that is priced higher than those in the surrounding area, especially when the other houses nearby have much lower size, improvements and value.

Before you go house hunting, check out your credit report. Go through the details of your credit history and report all matters that are worthy of note. You want to ensure that you have the best credit possible when applying for a home, you can help yourself secure a mortgage by doing this.

Never buy real estate without getting the property inspected first. You don?t want to discover after you buy that your house needs a lot of renovating. Not only will this cost a lot, you might need to change your living situation until it?s fixed.

Real estate agents should keep in contact with former clients over the holidays and on the anniversaries of their home-buying. By keeping in touch, you will remain in the client?s mind for helpfulness when they think about their own real estate experience. End your message by reminding them you work on a referral basis, and ask them if they would be willing to refer you to their friends.

The information that has been provided in this article should have taught you that purchasing a new property may not be as difficult as you thought if you choose to do proper research and are prepared. Using these tips, you may purchase property smarter.

A word from Bernanke turns stocks around

(AP) ? The stock market keeps getting tossed around by the Fed.

Stocks opened lower Friday but reversed course after a letter surfaced from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke suggesting there was room for the central bank to do more to help the economy.

"There is scope for further action by the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions and strengthen the recovery," Bernanke wrote to California Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican, in a letter obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 30 points at its low but finished 100.51 points higher, at 13,157.97, its first gain all week. It was still the first losing week for the Dow since early July.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 9.05 to 1,411.13 but also snapped a six-week winning streak. The Nasdaq composite index rose 16.39 to 3,069.79, ending five straight weeks of gains.

In a typically slow August, without much else to influence trading, investors have grasped for hints about what the Fed might do.

On Wednesday afternoon, investors pushed stocks higher after the Fed released meeting minutes that appeared to signal it was ready to take more action to prop up the economy.

On Thursday, stocks declined when a Fed regional bank president cast doubt on the idea, saying in an interview with CNBC that the economic recovery appeared to be gaining strength.

Then on Friday, Bernanke shook up the market again. His letter was in response to questions from Issa, the head of the House oversight committee, who had asked whether it was premature to consider additional steps.

The Fed has several options, including buying bonds, as it has done twice since the 2008 financial crisis, to try to lower interest rates and drive investors into the stock market.

Still, it's debatable how much future Fed action would help the market or the economy. On Friday, some analysts thought it strange that the market moved so decisively on just an inkling about what the Fed chairman might be thinking.

"What's new about what came out?" said Ann Miletti, senior portfolio manager at Wells Fargo Advantage Funds in Menomonee Falls, Wis. "I guess the markets are dependent on having some commentary about the macro economy every single day."

For the most part, the market has been hard to read this month. Without much news, trading volume has been low, and investors haven't had much conviction either way about the economy.

Of 18 trading days in August, only once has the Dow moved more than 1 percent. On five days, it has been virtually flat, moving less than one-tenth of a percentage point.

The turbulence likely lies ahead. The Fed's annual meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyo., is at the end of the month. German courts are set to decide next month whether the country can keep participating in bailouts for weaker European countries.

And the presidential election in November, which will help determine whether taxes go up and government spending is cut next year, could throw the markets into turmoil for weeks beforehand.

"People look forward to a lot of questions being answered in the months ahead," said Tony Fratto, a former aide to President George W. Bush and managing partner at Hamilton Place Strategies in Washington. "But they don't have answers today."

Economic reports that have trickled out this week have been mixed at best.

Europe, though quiet, still showed signs of tension Friday. Britain reported that its economy shrank in the second quarter, the latest confirmation that the country is still in recession.

The Greek prime minister met with his German and French counterparts to discuss Greece's bailout. Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said Greece needs "time to breathe" while it implements spending cuts that Germany is demanding. German Chancellor Angela Merkel replied that Germany expects Greece to follow through with its commitments, "that deeds follow words."

Durable goods orders, reported by the Commerce Department, rose in July but fell after excluding gains from the volatile transportation category. Durable goods are an important measure of economic health because those orders show whether businesses are willing to spend to expand or improve.

Among U.S. stocks:

? Software maker Autodesk skidded more than 15 percent, falling $5.58 to $30.13, after weaker-than-expected second-quarter results. The company is restructuring to shift to cloud and mobile computing, but it also blamed an "uneven" global economy.

? Drugmaker Eli Lilly jumped more than 3 percent, rising $1.46 to $43.86, after reporting promising signs about a possible treatment for Alzheimer's disease.

? The Madison Square Garden Co., which hosts shows and games at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Musical Hall and other venues, jumped nearly 3 percent, rising $1.16 to $41.41, after reporting that profits more than tripled in the fiscal fourth quarter. It was helped partly by more home playoff games over the quarter for the New York Rangers and the New York Knicks.

Facebook Underwriters Probably Regret Decision To Allow Early Investor Exits

Peter Thiel?s decision to sell almost all of his stake in Facebook so soon after the company?s initial public offering has few precedents in Silicon Valley, where venture capitalists typically hold shares longer.

Bloomberg reports that Thiel, a Facebook director and its first outside investor, divested 72% of his remaining shares three months after it went public. Of the 40 biggest U.S. technology IPOs since the end of 2010, only Facebook and its underwriters let some backers sell so soon, with every other company adopting a so-called lock-up period about twice that long.

While venture capitalists commonly sell their stakes after helping startups reach the public markets, they usually whittle their holdings over a period of quarters or even years. That?s to avoid flooding the market with too much new stock, which can drive down the shares, and to show continuing support for the company. Thiel?s timing was particularly precarious, because Facebook was already down about 50% from the IPO.

'With the benefit of hindsight, you could say that the underwriters probably regret agreeing to an early release of the shares', said Ted Hollifield, a partner at Alston & Bird LLP in Menlo Park, California, and an expert in venture capital. 'The stock still seems to be searching for an actual trading range and you would ideally like to see that take place before there?s additional selling pressure'.

7 Take-Aways from the Health Communications Marketing and ...

The National Conference on Health Communications, Marketing and Media in Atlanta is one of the largest and most informative gatherings to address issues of communication in the health field.? I provided live updates from the conference, but here are seven quick take-aways from this year?s conference (with an assist from my colleague, Diana Dijardi)

1)????? Include your target audience (aka people you are serving) in the planning and decision making process. Seems logical enough, but many community members are left out of the conversation.

2)????? Humanize your health message. This was a key theme in many of the workshops. This popular tweet explains it all: ??People don?t march in D.C. because of pie charts.?

3)????? With new technology you just need a few tools to create an effective health message.?Kerry Shearer said the ?days of 10,000 dollar videos are gone.?

4)????? ??Health literacy vs. Low literacy,? no matter how you simplified your health message is, you need to make sure the proper communications channels are used to reach limited English proficient populations. Some people respond better to video messages than written messages.

5)????? The internet is self-correcting; so don?t be afraid of negative comments. In a Facebook session with Ayla Tolosa, she shared that for every negative comment received; five positive comments popped up in support. As long as comments don?t violate your commenting policies you should try not to erase comments.

6)????? Know what inspires you. Your passion can be your purpose that leads you to innovation and implementation of new ideas.

7)????? Use humor to deliver health messages. Tim Washer shared we can use humor because it evokes positive emotions, cuts the noise, humanizes the brand, and shows authenticity. (This was a relief to hear, because we tried this for a health disparities conversation.)

What take-aways do you have from the conference?

Auction for sacred South Dakota land canceled

The planned auction of nearly 2,000 acres of land in South Dakota's picturesque Black Hills that is considered sacred by American Indian tribes has been canceled, though it wasn't immediately clear why.

Iowa-based Brock Auction Co. planned to auction five tracts of land owned by Leonard and Margaret Reynolds on Saturday. But a message on the auction house's website Thursday said it has been canceled at the land owners' direction. The auction house and Margaret Reynolds declined to comment.

Tribes of the Great Sioux Nation consider the site key to their creation story and are trying to purchase it because they fear new owners would develop the land, which they call Pe' Sla. The property, which spans about 1,942 acres of pristine prairie grass, is the only sacred site on private land currently outside Sioux control.

Rosebud Sioux Tribe spokesman Alfred Walking Bull said he didn't know the auction had been canceled when contacted Thursday. His tribe, whose reservation is among the closest to the land, had agreed to allocate $1.3 million toward trying purchasing the property, though tribal officials have said they feared the selling price could be between $6 million and $10 million.

Ruth Hopkins, who helps run a website where about 5,000 people have donated more than $250,000 to help the tribes purchase the land, said she didn't know why the auction was called off. U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs spokeswoman Nedra Darling said she also was not aware the auction had been canceled and had no comment.

A United Nations fact finder had urged federal, state and local officials to consult with American Indians ahead of the auction.

Roughly 20 tribes make up the Great Sioux Nation, which was fragmented when American Indians were pushed to reservations. The tribes now span several states, including Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Minnesota, and Canada.

The tribes believe the Sioux people were created from the Black Hills. According to part of their spiritual tradition, Pe' Sla is where the Morning Star fell to Earth, killing seven beings that killed seven women. The Morning Star placed the souls of the women into the night sky as "The Seven Sisters," also known as the Pleiades constellation.

Tribal members hold ceremonies and rituals on the land.

NHS set to go international under new govt scheme

The National Health Service could be expanding abroad as the government invites hospitals to set up profit-making branches overseas to raise funds for patients in England, officials said Tuesday.

Under the scheme, set to be launched jointly by the Department of Health and UK Trade and Industry this autumn, famous hospitals such as Great Ormond Street could create new branches in foreign countries.

The announcement comes a month after NHS staff including those from Great Ormond street played a starring role in the opening ceremony for the London Olympics, drawing international attention.

The Independent newspaper reported that upfront investment would only be drawn from income from private patients and any profits made overseas would be channelled back to England.

The proposal was reportedly inspired by hospitals in the US, including Baltimore's Johns Hopkins, which have taken similar steps.

Health Minister Anne Milton said: "This is good news for NHS patients who will get better services at their local hospital as a result of the work the NHS is doing abroad and the extra investment that will generate.

"This is also good news for the economy, which will benefit from the extra jobs and revenue created by our highly successful life sciences industries as they trade more across the globe."

Others criticised the move. Jamie Reed, a health spokesman for the opposition Labour party, said: "At a time when staff are losing their jobs and waiting times are rising, the Government's priority should be sorting out the mess it has created in our NHS."

The plan draws on a scheme first introduced under Labour which has seen hospitals expand abroad including London's Moorfields Eye Hospital, which has a branch in Dubai.

TomTom refreshes Navigation app for iOS, adds social features

TomTom has refreshed its Navigation App for iPhone and iPad with a new user interface, Foursquare integration and constantly updated maps. It'll also automatically check into your favorite hangouts to avoid forgetting to oust your frenemies at your local coffee house. The revised application will also help you avoid French speed traps that don't fall foul of new laws on traffic alerts, with the whole thing playing very nice with the recently announced car kit. The app retails for €70 ($87) in the App Store -- although we're not sure how popular it's going to be if those same features will be bundled in iOS 6.

Pom-Pom Rituals / Tiny Umbrellas: Interview with Dara Barnat!

Dara Barnat?s poetry appears or is forthcoming indiode, Poet Lore, Salamander, Crab Orchard Review, Flyway, The Collagist,?and elsewhere. She has been a poetry work-study scholar at the Bread Loaf Writers? Conference. Dara?s chapbook,?Headwind Migration, was released by Pudding House Publications in 2009. Dara?s PhD is from Tel Aviv University, where she teaches?poetry and creative writing in the faculty of English and American Studies.

Her poems??Highway? and ?Grief?s Language? appear in Issue Thirty-Four of?The Collagist.

Here, Dara Barnat talks with interviewer Amber L. Cook through topics of intuition, memory, and instability.?

1. What made you sit down and write both ?Highway? and ?Grief?s Language??

My motivation to write these poems was at first intuitive, unarticulated. However, I?ve come to realize that there was a strong urgency behind them (and other poems), to confront, personally and poetically, my father?s illness and death. For a long time I wasn?t ready to talk, let alone write, about these painful experiences. In retrospect, I believe ?Highway? and ?Grief?s Language? were important breakthroughs in finally examining and somehow writing through the fear, anger, and sadness. I hadn?t expected other types of sentiments to accompany this reckoning, such as joy, grace, and empathy. Lucky me, I found those, too.

2. I sense that the speaker?s father in ?Highway? perhaps had a disease like Alzheimer?s that affected his memory. Does the form of this poem (couplets) help you to write to this subject?

That is a very discerning reading of ?Highway.? Certainly I had in mind that the father displays signs of mental illness, although not specifically Alzheimer?s. I do think that in terms of form, the couplets create white space, which can represent gaps in memory. I was actually more conscious of using enjambments to echo the instability of the father?s mind, as well as the destabilizing effect of the father?s condition on the speaker, like in the line: ?I know / this, because someone told me / they saw my father on / I-84?? That said, while the poem autobiographically relates to mental illness, my hope is that it also speaks to experiences beyond my own. For instance, I heard someone explain it as about old age. Walking ?to nowhere? might be read as a metaphor for many kinds of deterioration.

3. In ?Grief?s Language? we see a shift from a speaker trying to do anything to avoid grief to one who eventually accepts it as?almost?a friend. One line that I?m especially drawn to is: ?I?ve started speaking to grief in every language possible.? How does the speaker earn this shift? Do the indents help the speaker to reconcile with this change?

That?s an interesting way to explain the shift. I?m not totally sure (in my own reading of the poem) whether the speaker?earns?the shift in attitude toward grief, as much as she (or he) is?forced?to accept?it. My idea is that grief follows you, no matter how far you run to escape it (even, as in my case, as far as the US to Tel Aviv). I think the indents represent the speaker?s transition from resisting, to accepting, and then, as you suggest,?almost?celebrating grief.

4. What?s something you?ve read lately that you got lost in?

For several years I mostly read poetry that was connected to my dissertation,?Walt Whitman and Jewish American Poetry. I spent a lot of time in the library with every edition of?Leaves of Grass, and work by Charles Reznikoff, Karl Shapiro, Muriel Rukeyser, Alicia Ostriker, Marge Piercy, Gerald Stern, and C. K. Williams, among others. When the dissertation was finished, I entered a phase where I read a lot of memoirs, short stories, and the occasional chick lit novel. After a while I started to miss poetry. One beautiful book I recently read (and reviewed) is?A Messenger Comes, by Rachel Tzvia Back. It is an elegiac collection, filled with stunning, prayer-like poems. I also just ordered several new books of contemporary poetry, though I like to forget what I ordered and be happily surprised when they show up.

5. These poems to me feel very connected; are they part of the same project? Is there anything else you?ve been working on lately?

Yes, absolutely, these poems are part of the same collection, which has a title I?m still keeping to myself. The poems in the collection arise from the life circumstances I?ve described, and grief that is confronted after a period of being delayed, deferred, or repressed, because of fear, shame, and/or stigma. The writing process ? truthfully my way of mourning my father ? has been simultaneously devastating and uplifting. I?ve been keeping a sort of journal about the writing process at a blog: mybookandi.wordpress.com. Writing a post every few weeks has made me more accountable to myself, in terms of getting the book done, and tracking its (very non-linear) progress.

VIDEO: Toddler Fight Club Video Gets Daycare Workers Arrested ...

After a video surfaced showing disturbing footage of what is called a ?toddler fight club?, three employees at The Hands of Our Future LLC Daycare in Dover, Delaware were suspended and will now be charged. Two 3-year-olds were filmed via cell phone video fighting each other at the daycare last March.

Although the video has not been released to the public, police report that one child could be heard saying ?He?s pinching me!? Following that statement, a daycare employee is heard saying, ?No pinching, only punching.? Clearly, this was an orchestrated brawl, instigated by the workers.

The employees, 19 year old Tiana Harris, 21 year old Estefania Myers, and 47 year old Lisa Parker, have all been charged with assault, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangering and conspiracy. This is very disheartening to hear, since we recently reported another disturbing daycare incident in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, just a few weeks back.

News coverage of the incident is below.

Are you more wary of leaving your children in daycare with multiple instances of neglect and/or abuse popping up?

Luck leads rally but Colts fall to Steelers 26-24

(AP) ? Andrew Luck doesn't expect this whole NFL thing to be easy.

Still, there have been times during the rookie quarterback's first two games for the Indianapolis Colts that he certainly made it look that way.

Showcasing the mental toughness ? not to mention the breathtaking skills ? that made him the top pick in the draft, Luck won over the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 26-24 preseason loss on Sunday night.

Luck shook off his first two interceptions as a pro to pass for 175 yards and run for a touchdown to erase an early 14-point deficit and exit with the lead.

"He's a tough kid," Pittsburgh defensive end Brett Keisel said. "He's a good quarterback. I think he's going to play a long time. (Colts offensive coordinator) Bruce (Arians) is, I'm sure, a happy man."

Hard to blame him.

Luck was simply dazzling in his preseason debut last week, shredding the St. Louis Rams for a pair of touchdowns. He knew the going would be considerably tougher against the Steelers (No. 7 in the AP Pro32), even if Pittsburgh (1-1) was playing without injured defensive stars James Harrison and Casey Hampton.

There were a couple of moments Luck looked overwhelmed, particularly when Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor stepped in front of an underthrown pass and raced 50 yards for a touchdown.

Standing on the sideline fuming, Luck collected himself. It's what he does.

"You've got a chance to go out there again, so you kind of flush it and focus on the next play," Luck said. "You're thinking so much with all the play calls that it's easy to forget about good or bad what happened earlier."

Luck bounced back with a sublime quarter in which he refused to get rattled against the defense that finished No. 1 in the league last fall.

Using his mobility to step away from pressure and his vision to find open receivers, Luck didn't look like a guy who won't make his first NFL regular-season start for another three weeks.

"(Luck) was able to come back and put it behind him just like he always has," Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano said. "We saw the same thing in college. He's able to bring his team back from behind so it was nothing surprising to us to see him come back and put those kind of drives together."

The Steelers aren't undergoing the kind of drastic makeover the Colts (No. 32) are enduring. Still, they have issues, namely getting used to new offensive coordinator Todd Haley's complex scheme.

The results so far are mixed.

Ben Roethlisberger completed 7 of 8 passes during his one drive of work in the opener against Philadelphia last week, all of them quick hitters. His first pass Sunday night ended up in the hands of Indianapolis' Antoine Bethea.

Antonio Brown and Roethlisberger atoned the next time the Steelers had the ball, with Brown doing most of the work. He hauled in an 18-yard pass from Roethlisberger on third-and-11 to extend the drive then put together a highlight-reel 57 yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.

The play was all Brown. He took a screen pass from Roethlisberger, cut to the middle and used some great downfield blocking by running back Baron Batch to get to the end zone. Brown ? who has become Roethlisberger's favorite target with Mike Wallace in the midst of a holdout ? added some style points by doing a flip as he crossed the goal line.

"It'd give it an 8.5," Brown said about the somersault. "I didn't stick the landing."

And the Steelers didn't stick with it. The play accounted for more than half of the 112 yards of offense Pittsburgh generated when Roethlisberger was in the huddle. Roethlisberger completed 5 of 9 passes for 81 yards and the touchdown to Brown.

"We're making a little bit of progress," Roethlisberger said. "I still think we're leaving a lot out there. We're not playing as good as we could or should, but we're making progress."

So are the Colts.

On the verge of getting blown out, the Colts responded behind their new leader. Luck led a 10-play, 80-yard drive after Taylor's pick and Donald Brown got Indianapolis on the board with a 1-yard plunge.

Luck had it going on Indianapolis' next possession before being undone by a turnover. He found rookie wide receiver T.Y. Hilton in stride down the middle only to have the wide-open Hilton throw the ball up in the air. Pittsburgh's Cortez Allen ran underneath it to thwart the drive, but it hardly slowed the Colts.

Indianapolis tied it at 14 when Luck deftly slid into the end zone on fourth-and-goal from the 1, ending a drive in which Luck completed all five of his passes.

Luck got one more chance just before the half, and he made it count. Working exclusively out of the shotgun, Luck led the Colts 31 yards in five plays, giving Adam Vinatieri just enough time ? and room ? to sneak a kick between the uprights at the halftime gun.

NOTES: Colts DE Robert Mathis left the game in the first quarter with a shoulder strain and did not return. Indianapolis WR Austin Collie underwent a concussion test after taking a blow to the head from Pittsburgh linebacker Larry Foote. ... The Steelers travel to Buffalo on Saturday night while the Colts visit Washington. ... Harrison, Hampton, running backs Isaac Redman and Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker Jason Worilds did not dress for the Steelers. ... Indianapolis backup QB Drew Stanton completed 4 of 13 passes for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Drone attacks pound northern Pakistan, killing 13 in two days

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - A flurry of drone attacks pounded northern Pakistan at the weekend, killing 13 people in three separate attacks, officials and witnesses said on Sunday.

The attacks came as Pakistanis celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan with the festival of Eid al-Fitr.

A drone killed five people and injured two in North Waziristan early on Sunday morning, an intelligence official said. He said the death toll was based on intercepted conversations between the militants.

Later on Sunday, another drone attack killed two people and injured two others near the site of the previous attack, said two intelligence officials.

On Saturday, a drone attack killed six people and injured two. The dead were local Taliban and fighters from the southern province of Punjab, said security officials and a tribal source.

Drone strikes are controversial in Pakistan, where many politicians condemn them as a violation of sovereignty. But the United States sees them as a key tool in the fight against terrorism.

Olympics viewer boost for 'Today' show short-lived

(AP) ? The audience boost that the London Olympics provided for NBC's "Today" show in its ratings battle with ABC's "Good Morning America" was short-lived.

The Nielsen Co. said Monday that "GMA" beat "Today" in the ratings last week, the week after the Olympics concluded, by an average margin of 162,000 viewers. NBC was counting on the Olympics to provide a launching pad for its new anchor team of Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, and it organized a series of concerts and visits by Olympians last week to keep up the momentum.

The week started well. NBC's audience of 4.54 million on Monday was bigger than any morning show last week, and "Today" beat "Good Morning America" by 338,000 viewers.

But "GMA" won the next four days even while not at full strength ? Robin Roberts returned this Monday ? and by a peak of 517,000 viewers on Wednesday, Nielsen said.

During the Olympics, "Today" dominated. It beat "GMA" each week by more than a million and a half viewers, taking advantage of its access to Olympians. The ratings after the Olympic flame was extinguished indicate that many of those viewers are not morning show regulars and retreated to their old habits.

"GMA" had beaten "Today" during each of the five weeks before the Olympics. There should be intense competition for viewers this fall; status as the top morning news show can means tens of millions of dollars in extra advertising revenue for their networks.

Roberts returned Monday after being off for two weeks, partly because of exhaustion brought on by her medical condition. Roberts has MDS, a blood and bone marrow disease once known as preleukemia. She is expected to be off for an extended period this fall after undergoing a bone marrow transplant.

HAVANA (AP) ? Endurance athlete Diana Nyad forged ahead through the Straits of Florida with renewed vigor Sunday in pursuit of a record 103-mile (166-kilometer) unassisted open-water swim without the aid of a shark cage.

The 62-year-old Los Angeles woman was said to be comfortable, confident and steady at around 50 strokes per minute after a harrowing night of painful jellyfish encounters ? despite a new-and-improved bodysuit she hoped would offer better protection.

Nyad was stung four times during the night on the neck, lips, hand and forehead, according to members of her 50-member crew who updated fans through social media.

"Today is more like swimming," one member quoted her as saying, via Twitter. "I don't know what you would call last night ... probably surviving."

At 18 hours into the swim, she had traveled 21.7 miles from Havana. Choppy seas were calmer, and her team reported only a light wind.

Nyad had planned to don the bodysuit, which covers her from head to toe except for holes for the eyes, nose and mouth, at night, when jellyfish tend to rise to the surface. But it apparently did not work as well as anticipated.

At least two of the stings were from the dangerous box jellyfish, which forced her to cut short her second of two attempts last year as toxins built up in her system.

At one point, with jellyfish particles everywhere in the water, Nyad changed strokes to keep her face out of harm's way.

"There are so many jellyfish," said another tweet. "Diana is swimming backstroke right now leading with the cap-covered part of her head to minimize contact."

"The backstroke is working!" it added.

By day, the jellies receded, and she was able to resume freestyle swimming.

Nyad, who turns 63 Wednesday, is making her third attempt since last summer at a cageless crossing of the Straits of Florida. She also made a failed try with a cage in 1978.

Australian Susie Maroney successfully swam the Straits in 1997, but she used a used a cage. This June another Australian, Penny Palfrey, made it 79 miles toward Florida without a cage before strong currents forced her to abandon the attempt.

A kayak-borne apparatus shadowing Nyad helps keep sharks at bay by generating a faint electric field that is not noticeable to humans. A team of handlers is always on alert to dive in and distract any sharks that make it through.

One of those divers was also stung by a jellyfish.

Nyad, goggle-eyed with sun-bleached hair, said before she set out from Havana's Hemingway Marina on Saturday that she had braced herself for pain.

"There's a reason no one's ever done it, but I'm prepared," she said. "I may suffer some, but I'm prepared for that, too."

Nyad has been training for three years and is in peak shape, according to friend and trainer Bonnie Stoll.

The team expects Nyad will take at least 60 hours to complete the swim, meaning she would arrive in the Florida Keys sometime Tuesday.

She takes periodic short breaks to rest, hydrate and eat high-energy foods like peanut butter.

Besides sharks, jellyfish, the elements and the limits of human endurance, Nyad must contend with the monotony and sensory deprivation inevitable in marathon swimming.

To help, she relies on a mental playlist of about 65 songs mostly "from my generation." They include classics from the likes of Bob Dylan, the Beatles and Neil Young, plus Janis Joplin's chart-topping version of "Me and Bobby McGee."

"If I sing that 2,000 times in a row, the whole song, I will get through five hours and 15 minutes," Nyad said in a video posted on her website.

"It's kind of stupid," she added, "but it gets me through."
